Period pants....are they good? And questions!

My Dd hasn't started her periods yet but I've seen lots of people talking about period pants.

Do you wear them instead of using tampons/towels or are they just protection to stop leaking?

I don't have periods anymore as I have a coil but this invention sounds amazing and would have helped me so much at school. I leaked into a chair during my first period and they were heavy from the get go.

I'm worried my DD will inherit my periods (my Mum was heavy too) so would like to find out a bit more about these.

Given the slew of period threads at the moment, I'll link you to this:

I bought some from Cheekywipes for Dd when she started 3 months ago. They are brilliant, a total game changer- so far no leaks and no need to use any other protection.

I got some for DD. Panty prop was the company. They were quite expensive and are totally useless. They do have a little pocket to put a pad into but they are not absorbent
She had her period when in hospital a few months ago and they leaked all the time even with a pad in them. We had to change the bedding every time she got up
During her most recent period I had to change her bedding every night for 4 nights in a row, again even with a pad.

I wouldn't bother with panty prop

What brands are good?

BoudiccaKate · 26/06/2019 15:37

The smell is pretty hideous!

APurpleSquirrel · 26/06/2019 15:40

I bought a pair from Modibodi and used them on my last day of last period and there were no leaks, but it was obviously the lightest day.
Yes, you wear them without a pad or tampon, and they come in different absorbances and styles.
I'm thinking of buying another pair in a higher absorbancy to see how they fair next time.
Since having DC my periods are really heavy at the beginning and then tail off, so it'll be trail and error to see if they work alone at the start of my period or if i'd need something else too.
I'm certainly thinking of getting some for DD when she starts.

AuntGinny · 26/06/2019 15:43

I'm really excited about these tbh. If not for me for my DD so she can carry on doing everything she loves to do physically in the same way as her brothers and no worrying about tampons or missing swimming with the swim wear ones. I have very heavy flow so would use as back up.

PCohle · 26/06/2019 15:44

I'm not a fan.

They do fill up and you can't really change them on the go (or you could maybe, but you'd have to then carry your blood soaked knickers around with you), which makes them way less convenient. You'd also need lots of pairs to get you through your entire period which would be quite expensive.

I guess they'd be ok as just an extra precaution if you were concerned about leaks or were spotting etc but they're expensive for that and I found them a bit sweaty.

VenusClapTrap · 26/06/2019 15:44

I’ve got some Thinx ones, which I wear on light days. I like them. I probably wouldn’t risk it on heavy days, although they’ve never leaked so far.

ContraryToPopularBelief · 26/06/2019 15:45

I've got some Cheeky Wipe ones. They're fine but a bit 'crinkly' which I hate. I have 1 pair of Modibodi which are spectacular but much more expensive.

I use a Mooncup but wore a liner every day for discharge and the odd sneeze related pee leak. Modibodi feel fresh all day. I will definitely be buying more.

CherryPlum · 26/06/2019 16:25

They seem to be basically a nappy

SweetPetrichor · 26/06/2019 16:34

I have 10 pairs of thinx and one pair of modibodi. I like them both and use them on the lightest days and overnight. I wouldn't use them on their own on heavy days but then that's because my flow is too heavy and I don't think it would feel as comfortable. I really like them for before and after my period as well because mine are extremely irregular and I have to go by the physical cues that it might be starting within the next week or so. I wear the period pants on the days where I think it might start but if I'm not sure - it gives me the confidence that if it does start, then I'm covered and won't suffer an embarrassing leak.

SarahBeeney · 26/06/2019 20:55

Thanks everyone, seems like they have some downsides so are more of a back up.

No problem, it's a good, useful site.

hellypad · 26/06/2019 21:43

My DD has the Mobibodi ones and they have been great, she wears them for her entire cycle and she gets on fine. She wears a pair to school then changes to a clean pair when she gets home and another for bed, no leaks no problems.

Pipandmum · 26/06/2019 21:50

They are great to prevent leaks but I wouldn’t use them on their own - you change your pad several times a day so you’d have to do that with the pants!
My daughter uses them as an extra back up to pads. They’re good for that but not to use on their own.

SandraOhshair · 26/06/2019 22:01

I use modi bodi through my cycle. I've 10 pairs a mix of heavy and medium use, on my heaviest days I'll swap pants in the day, they come with a little zip up bag to store them in. I used to always leak during the night but haven't since swapping. I really rate them.

negomi90 · 26/06/2019 22:03

I have cloth pads which I love. I have a variety of sizes (depending on flow and activity), and some waterproof bags. When I'm out, I change my pad and put the old one in waterproof bag, (ideally I rinse first if the toilet and sink are in one room). At home I have a bucket with water and detergent, I throw the pads in their and then put them in washing machine when my period is over.
They're super easy and far more comfortable then disposables (which I find itchy and crinkly).
I haven't tried the resuable underwear.

PCohle · 26/06/2019 22:09

IhateBoswell what's your problem with the OP?

If you think she's a troll then report it, making snide remarks is just rude.

SarahBeeney · 26/06/2019 23:42

I will look into reusable pads too when the time comes. They seem more comfortable to use than disposable. Things have moved on a bit since I started.
