If you have hypothyroidism please can you tell me what your first symptoms were. Were dry hair and dry feet one of them?

No symptoms as such for me - it wa just picked up via routine blood test but I do have v dry skin on legs and worst bit is my hair is thinning :((

Seasword · 25/06/2019 21:32

Flaky nails, ridged nails.
Overpowering exhaustion.
Feeling of choking when laid flat.
Poor swallow.
Weight gain

I think my hair is thinning as well. It keeps ending up all over the keyboard at work and I'm sure that never used to happen. Blush I hate going to the docs so just trying to work out if there is something in it. I've gained weight over the last few years (but I have a very sedantry lifestyle), messed up menstrual cycle, problems with sleeping, dry feet and I mean very dry. Similarly dry hair. Just feel bleurgh. But maybe it's the menopause as I'm 46. Confused

Dry hair and hands that alway felt like I'd just done the washing up.

Also carpal tunnel (both hands) and severe weight gain.

Massive exhaustion.

Get a test. Hopefully you won't have it!

BurnedToast · 25/06/2019 21:37

Nails have always been very weak. They are ridged but I can't remember if that's new. No choking and I wouldn't say I have overpowering exhaustion, but often feel tired. But then again I wake up by 6 on most days.

Didn’t lose any baby weight. Got picked up on a blood test.

justjuggling · 25/06/2019 21:38

My hair started falling out, I gained weight and was overwhelmingly exhausted, as in literally couldn’t keep my eyes open at times. Am now on levothyroxine and feel better. Took a while to get my levels right but worth persisting! Have you had a diagnosis?

origamiunicorn · 25/06/2019 21:38

Vomitting after eating (digestive system had slowed right down)
Dry, itchy skin
Exhausted
Putting on weight

Are you worried you may have it OP? Do you have any other symptoms? I was brushed off for about 2 years.

BurnedToast · 25/06/2019 21:38

Yes to dry hands as well.

Weight gain has stabilised for at least a year or so.

No, I haven't been diagnosed. I'm just trying to work out if I should bother the GP or not. I can't say I feel the exhaustion being talked about.

In the diagnosis process atm. My levels are definitely raised into the sub clinical (so mild hypo) range and I don't have the bone crunching exhaustion or unexplained weight gain.

I do find it easy to gain weight if I overeat then v v hard to lose it, and I do get tired sometimes. But main symptoms are always being cold, ridgey nails, anxiety, and joint aches.

I'm interested to see comments on carpel tunnel as I've had a lot of wrist pain.

Gamorasgran · 25/06/2019 21:48

Oh and yes to dry hands.

dingdang · 25/06/2019 22:03

I had bone crushing exhaustion and thinning hair. All resolved with medication. Worth checking with GP.

cubesofjelly · 25/06/2019 22:18

For years I felt the cold easily, had dry skin and hair, brittle nails, thin lashes and eyebrows thinned towards the end. Just thought that was how I was.

Started to struggle to manage my weight (not in a really bad way, but regular calorie control didn’t seem to make any difference and I couldn’t work out what I was doing wrong. I also started to get really tired, and really achy muscles. I was really busy at the time, every day, so put it down to that.

Mentioned it during a routine appointment for something else to find out if certain supplements might help (I kept thinking a B complex might be the answer to all my problems!). GP said that wasn’t normal and was going to run some bloods - I was pretty surprised tbh, kept emphasising how busy I was, but luckily for me he said, “Nope, still not normal”. And there you have it, 10 years diagnosed and doing much better on levothyroxine! It’s not been a wonder drug for me, but it has addressed out the core issues (like skin, nails, I’m less sensitive to cold now, brows and lashes are better, don’t readily get the terrible tiredness and muscle ache), but I’ve found exercise and diet (with support of my GP, a physiotherapist and a nutritionist) necessary to really feel well, however I’ve been told most people feel good primarily with just medication.

Hmmmbop · 25/06/2019 22:21

Tiredness, real exhaustion and weight gain. Then when I was diagnosed I realized that my hair was thinning, my skin dry and my digestive system slow. Once my medication was at the right level I stopped getting thrush.

cubesofjelly · 25/06/2019 22:22

FWIW with those mentioning carpal tunnel, I’ve had an array of musculoskeletal problems linked to my hypothyroidism (hence why I say my experience isn’t of total fix by medication), including carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel and tenosynovitis (among a variety of other things!). That’s where I’ve found physio, exercise and diet have particularly helped and made a big difference.

BurnedToast · 26/06/2019 18:28

Re: slow digestive system. I have noticed I can't eat late at night now. I will be kept awake all night with indigestion.
