Kids and hot weather

My DS hates the heat and doesn’t want to go out when it’s too hot.

Anyone else’s kids the same? Do you just end up staying indoors?

Shady woods are your friend. Take a pot of bubbles for distraction.

now you're going to tell us you live in the desert

How hot is too hot?

Also - go out early. Back by noon. Flop.

I'm like this. I wilt in the heat and never want to do anything except lie in front of the fan. But there are things you can do to make it more tolerable.

I agree with the previous posters about going out early and about finding shady woods if you can. Also, if you can find somewhere he can be in the water, that helps too. Even if it's just wading, it can make a big difference.

Thanks all.

What about out the back? Will yours go out there?

Mine have always preferred to stay in when its hot, they tend to mooch during the day and play out late afternoon/early evening.

AuntGinny · 24/06/2019 23:48

Get a big umbrella, gazebo or tent for outside. Create your own shade if there isn't any!

I tend to take them out early (before 11am) and again later (after 3pm) so we miss the hottest part of the day.

We have the misfortune of living in a quite extreme climate- winters are absolutely freezing and the summers can be sweltering. We just get on with it, go to the park early morning or late afternoon, lots of trips to beach or shady woods for bike rides... winters are much worse to be honest, then we really do have a reason to have to stay indoors, because frostbite. If you have a garden what about a paddling pool and erect some sort of gazebo over it for shade?

SpaceCadet4000 · 25/06/2019 00:25

I'm in a similar situation to Expressed! We regularly see 38-40c in the summer, and humid to boot. Winters are very cold, often icy and snowy.

Most summer activities involve water bodies of some kind.

Get a paddling pool for the back garden.

Go to the sea, a lake, a lido, or just some of those fountains kids can run around in. Get out as early as you can.

Get him a loose cotton shirt and dampen it by spritzing with water- it'll cause evaporative cooling.

Yep, out really early, home before noon. Then we used to have an indoor picnic (on a tablecloth/rug ) and a tv programme/film. The youngest would drop off and I could either read with the elder kids, play a card or board game or get out a craft activity. We often used to go out again before bed time to the local park or for a short country walk, or a paddle at the beach when it was cooler and their dad could come too as he was back from work.

Thanks. Will find woodland
