I am considering moving to Brixham for my retirement. Could you please give me any useful advice, plusses and minuses.

Hi @Coomer and welcome to Mumsnet. Hopefully a Brixhamite will be along soon to give advice...
Best of luck. M.

It is very hilly-not ideal for retirement if you develop mobility issues. It’s also small. It depends what you want-too rural for me.

Thanks, Could you advise which is the best area in Devon to retire to.

What are you after? Do you want rural? Coastal? Flat? Lots of shops? Decent public transport?
Do you want a village, town, city or completely rural?

Just a Bungalow by the sea.

Brixham is pretty but hilly and parking can be a nightmare, particularly in the summer. The nearby paignton or Torquay might be better for you.

StuntBottom · 26/06/2019 18:24

Not a resident but have family there so visit frequently. Parking can be an issue as there are lots of terraces cottages with no off-road parking. Bungalows tend to be further back, away from the sea. As previous poster said, it's hilly and there pedestrian access to the town centre from surrounding streets is often via steep steps. If sea view isn't essential, you could live away from the centre and drive in, but car parks fill up quickly in the tourist season.

Having said all that, it's my favourite place and I plan to retire there too!

IrenetheQuaint · 26/06/2019 18:29

It's pretty, but feels quite depressing during the winter (like most seaside resorts) and its location on the corner of Torbay means it can be a nightmare to drive in or out of in high season.

Budleigh Salterton?

Sidmouth is the place to go for retirement. It's a lovely seaside town with a pebble beach (so doesn't get such huge hoardes in summer). Great shopping and not far from Exeter.

Thanks to all of you for your advice.
