Hi we are going to USA shortly. Please give me some ideas for biscuits not usually found there, we'd like to take some to family.

Last time we took shortbread and would welcome other suggestions
Thanks all Grin

No crisps in the US? I find that really surprising, I thought crisps were fairly ubiquitous?

I know they call them potato chips but are they different enough for people to miss UK style crisps?

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 25/06/2019 07:21

Yes. I think Lays/Walkers are owned by the same people. But the flavours are all wrong here!

ThighsRelief · 25/06/2019 07:31

I lived in the rural Midwest years ago (before the internet!) There was absolutely no British or Irish anything then. I would have cried with joy to see a digestive biscuit. I also had biscuits and country gravy fairly often!

Yeah Jaffa cakes! You can get them there but they're so expensive!

ZazieTheCat · 25/06/2019 08:04

The olive oil Lays you get in Spain are amazing. Mmm.

MaudeLynne · 25/06/2019 09:43

Why import crisps when you have ruffles and crunchy cheetos that 'contain artificial color' - so the finger staining neon orange isn't from the cheese Shock.

NaturalBornWoman · 25/06/2019 09:51

Marks and spencer raspberry creams. Basically the best jam and cream biscuit you'll ever taste. Or a box of the chocolate covered ones.

I don't get the Jaffa cake love at all.

Fortnum and Mason biscuits. Buy online.
What airport are you flying from? Harrods and Fortnum and Mason are in some duty frees so you'd save luggage weight and tax by buying there.

CornerofUpandDown · 25/06/2019 10:14

If you are buying for Americans and not expats I would avoid Jaffa Cakes. Orange and chocolate is a strange combo for many Americans (not all).

Also what you buy is really dependant on the weather and how long they will be out of air-conditioning. I recommend the M&S most chocolate biscuit selection boxes but only if you'll be able to keep them cool. Otherwise they will be a massive, melty mess in most of the states right now in a matter of minutes. ☹️

We have crisps in the US, but as pointed out, we call them potato chips, or just chips. But we don't have many of the flavors that are available in the US, some of which would seem strange to most Americans. Basically, it's plain, barbecue, sour cream and onion, cheddar and sour cream, and variations of these.

I love Jaffa cakes. It is an unusual combination, but most people I know who have tried them, like them. We can get them where I live, though, so I know they are available in some places in the US.

SamBeckett · 25/06/2019 13:21

How about Eccles cakes or chorly cakes ?
I know they're not biscuits but they tend to be in about same kind of time with a brew.

Bumblenut · 25/06/2019 14:13

Ive noticed a lack of variation in crisps/biscuits* in the US too SenecaFalls, and other countries. There needs to be some kind of international convention to standardise this sort of thing. It’s a very important issue.

Sainsbury's Spotty Scotties.
Café Noir.

Many thanks to everyone who posted. Flowers

We live on a boat so could only shop at Tesco with a fairly restricted choice. Nevertheless picked out Tunnocks wafers, bourbons, custard creams, malted milk biscuits. Next time we visit we will bear in mind all other suggestions esp. the M & S selections - sound great Grin

JayeAshe · 26/06/2019 20:38

This is our narrowboat in which we cruise the waterways of England and Wales.

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD thanks for your interest , I love sharing my enthusiasm for the way we live. P M me if you would like a link to our web site , blog etc.

Oh yes oh yes oh yes! There’s a massive one moored in the Paddington Basin (I remember when it was the sludgy, dumpy part of the canal) - I think it may be a permanent one - and I love to go by and see the inhabitants sitting on the roof drinking their cocktails and watching the world go by them.

I’d be a bit feart of sleeping on one (but then the canal does have some dodgy sections further up) but love to visit the book shops that have popped up!
