When to tell council not eligible for single persons discount?

My DP will be moving in with me part time (approximately 4 - 5 days per week).

He has his own house which he is paying council tax for (albeit in another borough from me) and currently I am receiving a single persons discount on my council tax.

I've said I need to inform my council that I am not eligible for the single persons discount anymore and he's said I don't need to as he is paying council tax on a property.

I wondered what you think is correct? I don't want to get into trouble. Eventually he will move into his property for a while (he is renovating it currently so it's not liveable).

If he is maintaining his own separate household, is not paying you anything towards bills/rent, all his post is going to his own address, gp/dentist etc from his address then he’s just staying with you a few nights a week. However if he’s more formally moving in then yes you need to tell council tax.

I would have thought that since he's registered and still officially living elsewhere you wouldn't have to.

Thanks it's a hard one to call. No mail will be coming to mine so I'm inclined to leave it. Eventually he may rent his house out then move in full time then definitely I'd change it.

Ring them and ask? Councils can and do chase people years later if they think there was an issue - I know about someone being chased for money 6 years after she left the property. I wouldn't risk the worry personally.
