Puppy has hernias

DH 'surprised' me with a puppy at the weekend.

I had wanted one for a long time.

He went and saw pup with mum. Nice lady, local. Saw photos of dad.

Thought he had done things right Hmm

But in all honesty she's not a proper breeder. Pup is a mix breed. Just a dog. I just wanted a mobgrel.

Over the weekend realised pup has a belly button hernia

And just realised he has 2 inguinal hernias too either side of groin.

Apparently insurance wouldn't cover as it's a birth defect and should have been picked up by vet. Asked DH and lady said pup never saw a vet. Hmm

Kids been playing with him all weekend. Totally smitten

Cannot return him.

What shall I do? Just face the cost of the op or ask for some money back?

He wasn't much anyway. A few hundred

Please don't have a go at me for supporting back yard breeders.

I wouldn't have gone this route myself at all. I had no idea

And DH has never had a dog and is well meaning but a bit useless so there's really no point. I already know it was a daft thing to do.

He was last pup of litter so was already reduced

It’s possible it was a rented house with a ‘nice looking’ woman places inside as a temporary measure to slog the puppies.

I would get the puppy to a vet ASAP for a full check over.

Your husband was well meaning but ignorant and will have to pay the price of ensuring the puppy receives medical care, which may be ongoing if it has further genetic problems caused by bad breeding.

I'd get the puppy checked over by your own vet. Often inguinal and umbilical hernias can be corrected when your pup is neutered, but see what they say

The chances of you getting any money back or a refund are probably pretty slim. Unless the breeder/seller expressly stated things about the puppy which turned out to be false then you've not really got much comeback and for the sake of a few hundred pounds it's probably not really worth pursuing.

Definitely get the puppy checked over by a vet to see exactly what you're dealing with. Depending on severity some hernias can be left until neutering to repair however some can need repairing sooner rather than later. It sounds like the puppy didn't come with insurance so you do need to be aware that anything the vet finds (on top of the hernias) would likely result in exclusions when you do take out a policy.

There are various ways to report dodgy breeders/sellers. I'd go through this list and report them via any that are relevant.

She's sent me a full refund and an apology. The refund will cover most of the operation if I get it done as an add on to his neutering.

She was really lovely and very sorry that she hadn't noticed. Her dogs breeding was accidental and her bitch required a csection so was spayed then.

Good outcome from an honest woman - now, can we see pics of your lovely we pup?

Puppo · 24/06/2019 16:18

My dog had an umbilical hernia. It was a simple op done at the same time she was neutered, and pretty cheap too as the anaesthetic and admission costs were already covered by the neutering.

Wishiwasrunning2 · 24/06/2019 16:24

He is pretty cute!!

Tentomidnight · 24/06/2019 16:24

Just realised your puppy is a male, so ignore my comment!

Soola · 24/06/2019 16:25

Great outcome.

He’s cute.

CormoranStrike · 24/06/2019 16:31

Cute pup

It's great that you've got a refund which can go towards surgery if necessary. Taking what she's said at face value it does sound like she was very much in over her head so it would be a good idea to check up what she's done with regards to things like worming, feeding and socialisation.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/06/2019 18:48

He's a little treasure. Hope he's all better soon.
Congratulations on your new family member.
What did do when you first saw him.

We bought our first Lhasa from a kennel club approved breeder. Had all his vet checks, jabs, microchip etc. When he had his 6 month check we found out he only had one testicle which meant he needed an operation and no way would we be able to breed him. Op was done and now he's perfectly happy and healthy.

Second Lhasa was bought from an ad we saw on gumtree. Went to the house and it was clear they were very poor. I felt incredibly sad for all these puppies wondering about, the mum of the dogs looking exhausted and the dad dog looking slightly underweight. I wanted to scoop them all up, including the adult dogs. This Lhasa came with no papers, and no vet check. At his first vet check he had a umbilical hernia. Second vet check he too had only one testicle.

Moral of the story, you can buy a prime breed and it still have health problems. I have two happy and healthy Lhasa's, but I do often wonder how many other litters our gumtree poster will have ☹️

Same here. It's not uncommon and she was find afterwards
