Single bed instead of double ?

So am now single yay .
I have an antique double bed that takes up nearly all of my small bedroom.
I've been asked if I want to sell my bed which would a) give me enough room to have a single bed and a bedside table plus a chest of drawers too Smile
Plus the money left over would be oh so handy right now.

But I'm thinking that a single bed might be a bit uncomfortable, have any of you got one and is it doable?

Would a three quarter size bed (are they called queen size?) be better?
Singles don't look very comfortable.
But if you need the space then absolutely.

No way. I'd feel like a child

I have a single bed (I let my kids have the two double bedrooms and I have the single room). I like it, it’s fine. I don’t need any more room than that. Why have extra bed that you don’t need that means you have less clothes space if you don’t already have enough clothes space. Seems barmy to me!

Well people on here will tell you that they don't know anyone over 5 years old who doesn't have an entire king size bed all to themselves (God was that thread an eye opener) but we have a single bed in our spare room that I sometimes use if DP is snoring, one of us is ill, or we have cats or kittens need company for whatever reason (we foster and sometimes they are a bit traumatised so I like to sleep in the same room as them) and it's perfectly spacious and comfortable.

You probably get a better night's sleep than sharing a larger bed with a partner that thrashes around or hogs the duvet. Might partially depend on how big you are, obviously if you are 6 foot tall and size 18, you'd want a bigger bed than if you were 5 ft 2 and size 8.

In the circumstances you describe, where it gives you more money and space, it sounds like a no brainer. Or you can get a in the middle sized bed, that I think is 4 ft wide, so wider than a single, but smaller than a double.

Mmm I'm very short and fairly compact Winkbut I too was thinking it might be child like . The bed would be against a wall and I'm thinking of still using double quilt etc.

At the moment you literally have to breath in to manoeuvre around the bed.

Added bonus would be clothes in drawers in my bedroom would free up space in the box room and I would have more crafting space Smile

Honestly? I'd hate it and I'm petite. Could you get a 4ft one maybe? Wouldn't take up as much space in the room, but would be more spacious than a single.

WhiteLightTrainWreck · 24/06/2019 13:19

If it makes sense from a logistical point of view, tbh your post and updates make me say it's completely logical, go for it!

Rattysparklebum · 24/06/2019 13:19

Do you plan on being single long term op? Maybe in a year or two you will regret downsizing if you have ‘a friend’ 😉

MrsGaryLightbody · 24/06/2019 13:23

@Rattysparklebum I love your optimism Smile but no I am going to be happy just being me !

It's 2/3 the width of a double, I find it fine for sleeping but not as comfy for vegging out.

Those beds that lift up to reveal storage underneath hold loads. I think they might be called ottoman beds.

Peachesandcream14 · 24/06/2019 13:30

I often sleep in my DDs single bed, either with her or when she's away as the mattress is far more comfortable, it's spacious if you're not huge. I had a single bed all through my teens and uni though so I'm used to it. In your circumstances I'd go for getting a single and freeing up space, you could always get one of the Ikea daybed style beds that you can pull out to a double if you needed to, but tucks away the rest of the time. A nicely styled daybed certainly doesn't look childish

MrsGaryLightbody · 24/06/2019 13:40

Ooo a day bed.. yes perfect excuse to make cushions and throws !

Good thinking - lucky you have that extra craft space...

RainbowOfChaos · 24/06/2019 14:05

DH and I each have a single bed. If it works for you, go for it!

formerbabe · 24/06/2019 14:33

I can sleep in a single bed if I had to but would hate it to be my permanent bed....even if I was single and happy to remain that way forever, it feels very spinster and depressing to me
