traveling for work and no additional support

I work full time and DH works PT. We have a DS(7) and no family around. My work demands quite a bit of travelling and up until now we managed OK (as long as it was not on the days DH is working).

He is now applying for a FT position that also has a much longer commute.

Is this doable?
Can I ask how other people in similar situations manage?

Thanks!

Is an au pair an option? Otherwise finding a reliable local person, semi retired is often a good age group, a student perhaps? But also get back up plans eg a friend she could stay with occasionally. Lots of people do this, but the key is to have back up plans of the back up plan!

Thanks stucknoue
No, an au pair is not an option
Most of the good childminders around here are fully booked....but even then I have never heard of anyone doing evenings.
I will ask.
Thanks!
