What do almost walking babies wear for shoes?

Hi, sorry if this is daft, but I have no idea! DS has thus far been in grippy socks, but as he's now standing at every opportunity and walking along furniture etc. I'd like to get him some footwear for when we are out and about just to give a bit of protection.

What do I get? Where from?

Mine is at the same stage and I'm not buying shoes until he's been walking well a while as I've heard it's much better for them not to be encumbered by shoes until they're confident walkers (the bounty website, fwiw, says to buy shoes six weeks after they start walking). At the moment we're just using grippy socks and accepting they get very grubby or letting him go barefoot

MegaClutterSlut · 23/06/2019 22:22

I got mine from clarks. They're called cruisers

LookImAHooman · 23/06/2019 22:23

Is he definitely going to need it out and about - will he be standing on outdoor surfaces?

A local shoe shop will be able to fit ‘cruisers’ or pre-walkers properly for you. Please don’t rely on supermarket or high street shoes off the shelves or put them on too early. Tiny growing feet need correct fitting and support. It’s a bit pricier but a worthy investment my DC’s options are mostly whatever’s in the sale and fits Grin

M+s call them pram shoes

LookImAHooman · 23/06/2019 22:25

NewAccount fucking Bounty. Ridiculous. Even in winter we just layered up when out and about before they walked. So much better for orthotic and nerve development to have freedom of movement.

Mine wore these kind of things when crawling and cruising around the park or at toddler groups, they're about £5 on eBay so no worries if they get wrecked.

I got dd's from Clark's, they do first walkers which are designed to help going from crawling to walking. I find that they give her feet support and are helping her with balancing, I don't have them on her all the time though.

fedup21 · 23/06/2019 22:29

I had Robeez for mine.

MaggieFS · 23/06/2019 22:35

Thanks, yes, occasionally outdoor surfaces. I don't mind the grubby socks (much easier to deal with than grubby crawling trousers) but he's so happy standing and wobbly walking holding my hand, I'd like to be able to do so worry-free if we're somewhere I don't want him to crawl. I can't think of an exact scenario right now, but he's already grouchy if he stays in the pram too long, so thinking ahead, being able to get him out would help.

Very good points on food development, I think if I buy anything, he'd be wearing them for less than ten minutes per day, so I'd hope not a problem.

No shoes until they are walking confidently. A quick google would give you loads of websites saying the same thing.

sirmione16 · 23/06/2019 22:50

I watched a video the other day showing the development of a baby beginning to walk - it showed barefoot and in shoes and the difference was amazing. Apparently having the feel of the floor under their foot provokes certain reflexes, reaction and awareness that aids their balance and learning. So in short, I'm going to let my boy walk in socks whenever he possibly can (obviously not on really dirty/wet/cold surfaces)

I think you misunderstood the post - I was saying that bounty say not to buy shoes until six weeks after walking, so exactly as you say - don't bother with anything for a non-walker.

haveuheard · 24/06/2019 10:21

Thin leather slippers - like in photo above, until they are walking confidently and are stable. Early walker shoes cost a huge amount of money and aren't very good for their feet.

bigredvase · 24/06/2019 10:24

I would just buy very soft leather shoes with grips on the bottom if you need them.

MissYeti · 24/06/2019 10:25

We were told that wearing shoes is fine as long as they're barefoot inside to give their feet as much time and space to develop properly. DS wears his clarks cruisers whenever we go out but they come off as soon as he's indoors

newaccount that’ll teach me to skim read late...
