What would you do / who would you share with if you won the lottery?

Hi

I did the Euromillions on Friday night (think the jackpot was £30 million?) and I got an email to say I had won a prize.

I knew deep down obviously I hadn't outright won the lottery but it got me excited as I was thinking imagine I login to my account and it says I've won the whole £30 million!! But i only won £2.50!!

I was sitting thinking how I'd pay my mortgage off, buy a new car, and go on a nice holiday etc

If you won the lottery, what you do with it?

Would you go public or keep it private? I'd keep my win private, although it'd be quite difficult to I think as news is bound to spread.

Who would you give money to? I'd give a lot to charity, and my immediate family and very close friends, and then I'd put a good amount away for my DCs for their futures.

Would it be selfish if I didn't give anything to distant relatives? e.g cousins I don't talk to?

I love this lottery fantasy game. It shows how much we fantasise about helping other people before helping ourselves. It makes me believe in the human spirit, it's good for the soul

imsuchagrump · 23/06/2019 19:43

Well I would only tell dh and then immediate family and friends will be told that I've won some money but not told how much that's our business.
I'll finish the jobs on my house that I'm saving to do up . I'll book a holiday somewhere luxurious but where I can relax ( not do a thing for a week ) .
New car but nothing fancy but new not 10+ years old like I normally have .
My immediate family will be looked after and about 4 friends I would love to see right .
I'd buy a new house with plenty of room and a en-suite bathroom for me .
I'd set trusts up for my dc and my niece and nephew .
I ld book trips to New York and Vegas and a cruise in the winter .
I'd donate to a few local charities.
Get a dog.
And when I've done all that I'd like to invest in a business or maybe set my own up , it would be lovely to be my own boss .

If it was a euromillions level win, I'd give the bulk of it to the three charities that I support (local hospices) and the rest I'd divy up between family and close friends so that we all got enough to never have to worry about money again. I'd put a big chunk aside for the DC's future.
DH and I want to develop properties and I've often thought that if we had a huge win, I'd still like to build houses because it genuinely is our passion, but as part of a not-for-profit endeavour. Perhaps working with young people who are struggling with further education or cannot find a career path for whatever reason (not academic, excluded from school, in trouble with the police etc) and giving them the opportunity to try the different roles that are involved in building and managing a build, nurturing their talents, letting them choose a path that suits them and setting them up with the qualifications they need. Maybe the money from selling the houses would be enough to pay them an apprentice wage and even buy them a van/tools etc to get them started when they "graduate". I'd love to do that. I think a lot of people are let down by the education system.

I dont have a large family (parents are dead & Im single - no kids) but I’d share it between my sister, brother, cousin, uncle who has cancer and my closest friend who has depression. I’d make sure she had a lovely house and an income for life & the best CBT and care. I’d also give some to cat charities and my local villiage hall. Then id pay off the mortgage, retire, buy a camper van and go & tour Ireland & Scotland.

Nat6999 · 23/06/2019 19:59

I would buy a new build house & choose all interior fixtures & fittings, have it adapted to make it work for me ( I'm disabled) & ds, have the garden landscaped to make somewhere that I could relax & enjoy. Pay for rest of ds & my nephew's education, somewhere that would allow them to flourish as both have SEN. Give my mum enough money for her to live comfortably or buy her a new home if she preferred & buy a car & pay for a driver so she could get out whenever she wanted. Buy my brother & SIL a house with an annexe for my nephew so that once he is older he can live independently in safety. The rest I would invest for financial security for the rest of my life & so I know that ds would be well provided for. I'm not bothered about travel & holidays, I'd rather have a home that is comfortable.

LaPufalina · 23/06/2019 19:59

We're in a syndicate at work so mine would be £3m rather than £30m. They all joke that if we won it would only be me in on Monday morning (I love my job!)
£3m would be lovely. My family are comfortable but would love to buy my dad a super-posh car. I'd do lots of sports tours abroad (cricket in the West Indies, lions tour...) I'd pay the mortgage off, get a London pied a terre and a horse. I have a lovely small-ish charity I support/have volunteered with for ten years so they would get a decent six figure sum.

ilovesocks · 23/06/2019 20:11

I would keep it quiet.

I would pay off my Mum's mortgage. Buy one of my brothers somewhere to live. Get cracking with IVF. Splurge on the house, I'd like our floorboards redoing well and to reinstate them in rooms where there are none, not massive renovation but the jobs that add up. And I would consider buying a horse too. I don't think I would love house, I love my house. My current job has an awful manager, so I would consider quitting if they wouldn't let me go part time ASAP.

heymammy · 23/06/2019 20:11

I would pay off various mortgages...mine, exdp and my mum's. I would buy my dbro a flat and make sure he has a mental health support package in place.

I would give a chunk to exdp to do with as he pleases for himself and his sibs/mum.

I only have a small family, one side are millionaires already so wouldn't need support but the offer would be there.

I would pay off several of my dfriends' mortgages (I'm in Scotland so no crazy £million mortgages), donate to a local charity that I am involved with, give maybe £100k each to the primary & secondary schools the dc go to and book a holiday for the summer.

The rest would need to wait until I had spoken to a financial advisor.

Honeyplop · 23/06/2019 20:13

I'd buy my forever home, set a large chunk aside for my children, make sure my mum was comfortable and then invest the rest in a pension. After taking my family on a fabulous holiday!

AnybodysDude · 23/06/2019 20:13

I would buy several properties - a large one for DH and I and our two kids, with another smaller property on the grounds for MIL (and I'd stick some cash in an account for her to top up her pension so she can fully retire).

I'd buy a 4 bedroom property for my parents, so they have enough for a spare room, and an extra room each to do what they want with (home cinema, walk in wardrobe...). A 3 bedroom property for each of my two brothers and their families, who would otherwise never be able to get on the property ladder.

Then I would buy another two to rent out, but so that both DS and DSS had a house for when they are older.

And a holiday home somewhere in the UK.

Whatever was left (I'm assuming there would be some leftover if a 30mil win!) Would go on a big once in a lifetime family holiday and the remainder in a pension pot.

Karlwho · 23/06/2019 20:21

I would obviously tell my dh and maybe my kids and that's it. I wouldn't tell anyone else at all. If they found out/suspected, fine but I wouldn't confirm.
I'd set up a decent savings account for us as a family, then one each for the four of us.
We have no debt, and live in a rented house, and tbh, I doubt we'd move.
I'd like to treat my sil and n ieces to something; whenever we see them, my sil ALWAYS buys the food and refuses to take money from us/let us pay, so I'd want to spend on her and her kiddos.
We'd probably have some 'silly cash' to spend on crap

Snog · 23/06/2019 20:31

10% at least to charity
10% for my DH to personally choose what to do with
10% for my dd
10% to family and friends

midsomermurderess · 23/06/2019 21:22

I'd think hard about which charities to give money to then I'd split it equally with a sibling. I would stay resolutely anonymous about it and require my sibling to do the same.

BackforGood · 23/06/2019 21:22

Totally depends how much you are talking.

£1million ?

£30million?

You can't really keep £30million quiet.
It also gives you lots of completely different options for what you would do with it. I actually think that kind of amount is beyond the comprehension of most ordinary people. I think it is ridiculous to offer such huge prizes - so much more tempting to buy a ticket if they offered 1 x the chance of winning something completely lifechanging like £3million or the odd £5million.

user1497863568 · 23/06/2019 23:07

I love what I do so I would keep working but I would definitely travel more - I guess I'd keep quiet about being a lottery winner in that case.

Likethebattle · 23/06/2019 23:41

I’d walk out my job and leave them to it...i’d buy one of the lovely big houses nearby and build in a gym etc. My mum and brother would be taken care of and have a lovely home each. I have a lovely friend who can’t work due to poor health (not ill enough for any actual benefits though) and her husband works 6 days a week...i’d pay off their mortgage. Another friend i’d pay for her mum abroad to have a nice apartment and pay her debts. Then i’d get a fuckton of dogs and live happily.

MagentaRocks · 23/06/2019 23:45

I know what houses I will buy. I also have worked out who gets what depending on how much I win. I have different friends and family that Will get different amounts but they have to keep it a secret as some get more. I also have trusts planned for the younger family members. I just have to win now. 😁.

Happysummer2020 · 24/06/2019 00:22

I would support but then I would step in to support people in immediate difficulties. There are stories all the time in local papers & online where a quick injection of cash would smooth the path of people who are struggling.
That's lovely

Hotterthanahotthing · 24/06/2019 00:40

I would tell my family I had won a much lesser amount.Ask my mum to change her will so that I am not a beneficiary.
Retire from work.
Buy a new car,not a big one but my current one is on it's last legs.
Sort my house out but not move until DD leaves home.
Can help DD better at uni in the future.
Invest the rest, take some interest for income and the rest for charity.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 24/06/2019 01:53

I’d invest a chunk each for my children, two of whom have ASD and could need help for much longer than an NT child would.

I’d get a Nordic style modular house built to our specifications.

I’d sort my dad out with a new place.

I have a few friends I’d pay off mortgages for.

I’d donate a sizeable chunk to the school one of my children goes to to enable them to expand their provision.

If there’s enough left I’d invest it to provide a reasonable monthly income. I’d hire a cleaner and a gardener.

Bloodybridget · 24/06/2019 05:53

Do all the things we'd like to do to our house and garden, and move out while the work happened. Give my DB and my nieces big chunks of money; would also give to my cousins and DP's DCs and the grandchildren. Some charitable donations, and whatever lovely holidays DP and I wanted, travelling in comfort! Some new clothes.
