Explain to an idiot how to simplify this equation so I can help dd.

5(p+6)-6(p-2)

Idiot proof instructions a must

Many thanks Smile

Multiply brackets first.
(5p +30) - (6p - 12)
Then remember that - a - is a +
So 5p + 30 - 6p + 12
Gives -p + 42
Or 42-p as it looks nicer

IsolaPribby · 23/06/2019 14:40

Multiply out the brackets then add up, so you get:

5p + 30 -6p - 12

Which becomes 18 - p

HonniBee · 23/06/2019 14:42

I agree with @HappyHolidays75!

UniversallyUnchallenged · 23/06/2019 14:43

Expand (brackets = multiply)
5p + 30 - 6p + 12

++=+, +-=-, -*-=+

Collect like terms (p and numbers)
-p + 42

captaincorellisvaseline · 23/06/2019 14:44

Yes, @IsolaPribby hasn't -ed the - in the brackets (thereby turning it into a +)

Iwantacampervan · 23/06/2019 14:45

I've probably been beaten to this but here goes:

  1. Multiply out the brackets

5p + 56 -6p -6-2=
5p+30-6p+12 (minus*minus=plus)

2. Collect the letters together and numbers together

5p-6p +30+12

3. Work out how many of each you have
-p +42 or rewrite as 42-p (5p-6p=-p as 5-6 is -1)
Livingthedream12345 · 23/06/2019 14:48

First You need to multiply all the things inside each bracket by the number at the front so...
5 times p plus 5 times 6......5p +30
Then -6 times p minus -6 times -2....-6p + 12
Put it all together
5p +30 -6p+12
Look at the p's and 'tidy it up'
5p-6p....so -p
Look at the numbers and 'tidy it up'
+30 +12 ....so +42
Answer is -p+42

Does that make sense?

mummmy2017 · 23/06/2019 14:55

5(p+6)-6(p-2)
5p + 30.... Is the first expansion...
-6p + 12..... You have to times both the second numbers in the bracket by -6...
5p - 6p.....is -p
30 + 12. ..... Is 42...
Therefore p
Is -42...

SarahTancredi · 23/06/2019 14:56

Ok I think that makes sense. It's been a long time

So following that 3(y+5)-5(y-3)

That would become 3y+15-5y+15

-2y+30 ?

Livingthedream12345 · 23/06/2019 14:57

Yes

mummmy2017 · 23/06/2019 14:58

Yes. So y is - 15

IsolaPribby · 23/06/2019 14:58

Sorry, my bad!

flowersinaugust · 23/06/2019 15:15

@mummy2017 there's no = in the equations so it's not possible to state what the letters are equal to. This is simplifying not finding the values of the letters.

SarahTancredi · 23/06/2019 15:32

Thank you all we got quite good at this. The hdeo help made it more complicated than it needed to be
