Over reactions to insect bites

Every time I get an insect bite the area around it goes through a complete over reaction. The bite will swell massively as will generally at least a 5 cm circle around the bite. It will also be unbearably itchy and sore. Anyone else experience this and found anything that works? I am already on antihistamines for hayfever and have taken piriton. I've tried aloe vera, hydrocortisone, anthisan and after bite (plus more probably). Been bitten on my hand yesterday and struggling to move all fingers now as swelling is so bad

You need insect repellant containing Deet. It’s a misery having the bites, cover up as much as possible, & tap 1% hydrocortisone cream on the unbroken bites.

I get a massive reaction to bites, but found rubbing a banana skin on them every hour or so made the itching and swelling go. (inside of banana, the wet part) Grin

I use cream designed for use on hemmaroids. It really takes the sting and itch away. It has to be applied generously and frequently

I also get extreme swelling with bites. I use this all summer and it's the only thing that stops me getting bitten.

Cut a garlic clove in half and rub the cut ends on the bite. Sounds bonkers but it really helps Smile

I got savaged last month, either from mozzies or bed bugs. They swelled up so alarmingly that I went to the GP! I found rubbing the bites with lavender oil helped (I was also using Anthisan cream and piriton).
My histamine (?) reactions have got worse as I got older. I also react to the chemical in dark hair dye, again this has worsened with age.

Cloth soaked in very hot water helps a bit. It's awful isn't it...If I get bitten by mosquitoes or horseflies I develop enormous fluid filled blisters 🤢

IgnoranceIsStrength · 23/06/2019 18:22

I will give all of these a try. Thank you

This is what happens to me. EVERY year 😒. I’ve ended up in hospital twice in the last 2 years. I wear deet every day now as this doesn’t always happen abroad and my blood tests are fine. I also have a stock of anti biotics that my GP prescribes to start on straight away if I get bitten.

goingtotown · 23/06/2019 22:28

@BlushPinkRose. That looks so painful, hope it clears up soon. I’ve just read the reviews about the Mosquito Milk, sounds promising.

Gosh those are some huge reactions. The only thing I'd add to try would be icing the bite as soon as possible. I don't know if it would help, but I have allergy shots, and icing the site of the shot really reduces the reaction.

Tea spoon that has been in hot cut of water, and apply to the insect bite.

Prescription strength antihistamines.

Pepperama · 24/06/2019 01:29

Hospital docs in Hungary once suggested calcium tablets and antihistamine which really helped.
