Favourite supermarket for delivery

My Ocado delivery pass is expiring next week and I think I fancy a change. I like Ocado but it is more expensive.

I love Aldi/Lidl but I don't have a car and my nearest ones are a train ride away so not really worth it.

Who's your favourite? Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Iceland? Or do you do a combination of two or more? I can't do Tesco sadly as they don't take Visa Electron.

I do my main shop at Asda, I can usually get a delivery slot for a pound, and they unpack it in the kitchen.
I'd love to get Iceland to deliver but my freezer isn't big enough for their minimum delivery.

sergeilavrov · 23/06/2019 01:46

When we are in the UK, we now do Sainsburys online. We used to be avocado users but too many products going bad quickly, and items substituted too often. They are always lovely with deliveries, and never ever replace my bloody challah bread with hot dog buns Hmm

marciagetscreamed · 23/06/2019 01:51

ASDA. The produce is good and if you shop right, it's more or less as chap as Aldi. Plus I find I don't have to book my shop seven days in advance like I do with Tesco.

Sometimes the substitutes are hilarious (toothpaste for batteries as an eg) but I think that adds to the charm.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 23/06/2019 06:02

But won't you then potentially miss a visitation by Jesus In The Cabbage Van, OP ?

(Never wears thin, that one...)

sashh · 23/06/2019 06:37

I prefer Morrisons food but I had a bad experience, they don't take your money out of your account until after delivery and it can be a couple of days later.

I mostly use Tesco, when we had snow last year my carer couldn't get to me but Teco could, so the drivers unpacked into my kitchen and asked if I needed help to put things away in cupboards / fridge / freezer because normally my carer does the unpacking.

Another time I missed a call from them saying my card had been declined, I called them about 2 hours later, they said the driver had already been past my address and sorted a delivery for the next day.

15 mins later they called back, the delivery driver had finished his round and had come back to mine so did I still want the delivery?

Obviously I have no idea if that is Tesco in general or Steve the local Tesco person who organises home deliveries.

You can book a 1 hour slot for delivery ora 4 hour slot that is cheaper, I go for the 4 hour slot, they send you a text the day of delivery with a one hour time frame.

Sometimes they call to ask if they can deliver early.

theneverendinglaundry · 23/06/2019 06:38

@zuzu Haha!

I once had Keith delivering my shopping in a lemon van.

@theinebriati agree with what you day about Iceland. I have used them a few times and they're lovely - once a bottle of beer was leaking and the driver actually popped back later in the day with a replacement!

My dad loves ocardo for the notifications about Bob in the raspberry van. I usually go for Tesco as I find their website and app much easier to use than sainsburys. They also stock the right formula for DD and their special offers are usually good. I tried asda for the price but I had so many substitutions and missing items that what turned up might as well have been a shop for someone else. I'm 90% Tesco.

sashh · 23/06/2019 06:43

We used to be avocado users but too many products going bad quickly

Well if you use an avocado instead of a delivery can what do you expect?

Drogonssmile · 23/06/2019 06:52

I use Morrison's and Ocado. Pretty much the same (apart from the products) same app, never had any problems. Been using Morrison's for about 4-5 years since it first started up north.

fleshmarketclose · 23/06/2019 07:05

I use Morrisons and never have any problems. I seem to be able to navigate the website better as well. Will renew my delivery pass with them when it expires.

Ullupullu · 23/06/2019 07:08

If you like Ocado, go to Morrisons! It's the same app and website. Same receipts. Can return their plastic bags for refunds. Much cheaper products obviously! All good quality. (By "the same" app and website I mean it literally is - Ocado sold it to them)

NoWordForFluffy · 23/06/2019 07:21

It annoys me that you have to have bags from Ocado and Morrison's and then return them. I prefer to choose to have deliveries without bags to start with.

I generally use Sainsbury's for deliveries (they're not actually particularly dearer than other places, but their pack sizes on veg and fruit tend to be bigger, hence costing more per pack, but not per kg). Rarely any subs, but if there are subs they're normally sensible. Customer service is great. And the fruit and veg last really well.

I'll tart about other places too if there's a good offer I want to take advantage of, but I have the Sainsbury's midweek pass which works fine for our needs.

theneverendinglaundry · 23/06/2019 07:30

@ullypullu the thing that put me off morrisons is that I only have until around 5pm the day before to edit my order. I usually plonk on the sofa after getting the kids to bed to add extra stuff. I could work round it but have to organise my brain differently

OP posts:
StatFlanley · 23/06/2019 07:30

I mainly use Ocado as then I pretty much know In getting what I've ordered. Plus I'm a massive Francophile and love their vast range of French stuff.

I like Morrisons but their use by dates are atrocious, I got a shop one evening and most of the fresh food was best before 2 days later, they said they clearly advertise average use by dates but I find Ocado seems things with much longer dates.

I hate Asda but that's cos our local store is horrific and sadly the staff are too, once given can of evaporated milk instead of newborn baby formula (must have been my grandma doing the picking!). A delivery drive once swore profusely down the phone at DH as part of our address had been deleted on his delivery sheet!

I use Tesco and Sainsbury's too, Tesco I find genuinely same price as Ocado but also lovely staff, Sainsbury's can be cheaper but far more subs and less overall choice.

Sorry, not v helpful but when Ocado tie in with Marks I'll have to find an alternative as will bankrupt us otherwise, I'll probably fit between Tesco and Sainsbury's with more popping to Waitrose/Marks/Aldi to fill the gaps.

UnderPompeii · 23/06/2019 07:36

I have a delivery saver pass with Tesco and they are pretty good, they let you know if they're running late (hardly ever happens), you don't pay more for substitutions, I've rung up customer service a few times about fruit or veg I haven't been happy with and they have immediately refunded. BUT - my shopping is slowly getting more expensive, I am regularly hitting £100 for the 4 of us. Maybe this is happening everywhere, I don't know, but I've definitely noticed it.

TerribleTwosPhase · 23/06/2019 07:40

The twice I have ordered with Sainsburys they have cancelled my order the night it was due to arrive ( when i had nothing else out the freezer for dinner becasue I was expecting my delivery 😂) then not put the money back in my account for a few days. I haven't tried any others but that has put me off deliveries. Click and collect is meant to be quite handy at Asda too.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/06/2019 07:55

It's obvious from these threads that the quality of service depends very much on where you live, so it's hard to know what's what where you are without trying each one out.

SammySamSam09 · 23/06/2019 08:31

Tesco all the way. Been with them for years now. I get a box of chocs and a bottle of wine from them for being a loyal customer every now and again. They often chuck in cat and dog food samples and have always got here even in the snow. Never any weird subs or any issues actually. Often here within the first half hour of my hour slot.
It's a shame you can't use them though OP.
Anyone else who is thinking of changing should give them a go though.

sashh · 23/06/2019 08:36

Oh on the subject of substitutions.

I once ordered 2 pieces of Tesco own brand brie, I received 2 Kg of President Brie.

I didn't know as my carer took the delivery and only when he was putting it away did he ask me where I wanted all the cheese.

NoWordForFluffy

I think you are spot on there. As mentioned above I'mon first name terms with the manager at the Tesco that delivers to me.

I know Morrisons deliver from a wherehouse rather than a shopso some things are not available eg jam doughnuts.

Vinorosso74 · 23/06/2019 08:49

I always use Sainsburys for online shopping and have never had any problems with them. I have no substitutions after having a couple of odd ones. I don't really like Tesco or Asda so have never used their online shop.

theneverendinglaundry · 23/06/2019 08:57

@nowordforfluffy I think you're right. It really does seem to depend on the local store that is picking and delivering your order.

I reckon I might just give them all a try and then decide!

OP posts:
EggysMom · 23/06/2019 09:08

I've used Tesco for years, never had a problem - until last week, when I got a phone call in my hour-slot to say they had driver issues and wouldn't be making my delivery. That was it, just "we cannot do it". Problem was that I was on my own with our disabled son, no car until DH returned later that day, and waiting on that food for son's lunch (don't normally run out but he'd been massively hungry!)

I'm afraid that I stood my ground, saying that it was unacceptable, and that they hadn't tried to find a solution, for example they could have arranged a taxi to deliver it, or at least to deliver the urgent items. I think that annoyed me more, that they hadn't even thought about alternatives. Funnily enough they found a solution, they put it as first delivery in the afternoon run so it arrived just after 12.

Ullupullu · 23/06/2019 16:27

The cut off time for editing orders always depends on your delivery time. My cut off time yesterday was 23.10 for tonight's 8pm delivery slot. If your cut off is 5pm then your delivery must be the morning and that would be same for Ocado?

DareDevil223 · 23/06/2019 17:38

I mainly use Waitrose or Sainsbury and I haven't had any problems with either. Waitrose's website can be a bit glitchy though.
