There aren't many children's books which I haven't managed to finish but I cannot get to the end of this one.

Has anyone else read any other tear jerking children's books?

@InterestingShipNames It's called No Matter What. And yes, usually got me too (twins too old for it now), especially now since DH read it at his DF's funeral. wail

Ooogetyooo · 23/06/2019 20:36

Ah yes 'the steadfast tin soldier' and that little tin heart found in the embers of the fire 😩

Ooogetyooo · 23/06/2019 20:38

Ah Agueros 💜💐

Another vote for the paper dolls here.

Her Benny is utterly heart wrenching and cruel. Poor little Nell.

And not old or particularly for children, more teen/young adult but the fault in our stars had me sobbing hysterically, particularly because I knew the story of the real life girl (Esther Earl) that the narrator /main character is based on. The whole thing was just so utterly utterly unfair.

NatNoo · 23/06/2019 20:44

The Railway Children - where their father comes back and Bobby sees him at the station.
Gets me every time - especially when I watch the film.

BillywigSting · 23/06/2019 20:46

Little foxes by Michael morpurgo is a devastating read too

ReggaetonLente · 23/06/2019 20:51

Love You Forever here as well. I bought it when DD was born and the first time I read it I remember it really hitting me that I was her mummy, and I would always be her mummy no matter what. Sounds silly but the end still gets me, it's a lovely celebration of the love between parents and their children.

ReggaetonLente · 23/06/2019 20:57

I love Wish by Emma Dodd too. Gorgeous book.

MarvellousMonsters · 23/06/2019 21:02

The first book that made me cry as a child was Bel Ria: Dog of War.
As an adult Boy in the Striped Pyjamas left me traumatised. I’ll never watch the film and I felt my children were far too young to read/watch it in Yr 6.

LouH1981 · 23/06/2019 21:11

My Dad died the year before my DS was born. The line ‘it won’t feel like Christmas without their Stick Dad’ in Stickman gets me every single time 😢

fedup21 · 23/06/2019 21:12

I cry like a baby at Once There Were Giants. Proper sobbing

Me too-I just can’t help it-my voice goes all funny!

CottonSock · 23/06/2019 21:15

Amazing thread..I'm stocking up as I love a sad book.

JumpJockey · 23/06/2019 21:21

There was a period of about 4 years after Goodbye Mog when all DH had to do was say Mog and I’d start crying. After a while it was like a conditioned response - I wasn’t sad any more but would weep anyway. It’s ok now...

One book nobody’s mentioned is The empty stocking, which I got my DDs as a Christmas present a few years ago. It’s not meant to be a sad ending, it’s more like happy crying, but I get a massive lump in my throat. When 10yr old DD was reading it to her little sister I had to hide my face in a pillow at the end!

I also well up at the end of The snail and the whale.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 23/06/2019 21:22

I've got PMT and I've cried all the way through this thread.

I've just bought youngest DD the little match girl from Amazon. I will sob tomorrow too now

TitianaTitsling · 23/06/2019 21:22

Not yet brave enough to read Goodbye Mog, can't read Going on a Bear Hunt anymore after the animated episode on last Christmas -he just wanted to be friends and they ran away!!! And @ihavealoobrush the Herriot story about the old man who had to have his old dog (and only friend!) put to sleep, and he still gives James a battered cigar, and the farmer who's entire herd had to be culled and the description of the empty byre '"it was all that was left of a man's dream"....😭😭😭

PrincessSD · 23/06/2019 21:36

I can’t even bring myself to buy Goodbye Mog. Me and my DH cry just talking about it!

lavenderbluedilly · 23/06/2019 21:39

The Little Matchstick Girl

IhaveALooBrush · 23/06/2019 21:52

TitianaTitsling why did you have to mention that???? I've had three glasses of wine!
I am crying myself to sleep tonight. Grin

Especially since I forgot about The Little Prince until now.

Loobylu44 · 23/06/2019 21:52

Badgers Parting Gifts is pretty sad, I agree that Goodbye Mog is a real tearjerker. It still shocked me that Mog died even though the title pretty much told me what to expect. I read Mogs Christmas straight after it to make myself feel better!

CauliflowerBalti · 23/06/2019 22:16

Tabby McTatt.

Has anyone mentioned that yet? Loads of others mentioned here also get me (I cry at everything) but I don’t think anyone has mentioned Tabby McTatt. Sob.

Guest8989 · 23/06/2019 22:18

There’s a goodbye mog? Oh god no I don’t want to know

Guest8989 · 23/06/2019 22:19

Mog DIED?

TitianaTitsling · 23/06/2019 22:26

loobrush Wine in sobby solidarity...

Secondhandthreads · 23/06/2019 22:33

Mole and the Baby Bird is so unbelievably sad and beautiful that both my son and I cry when we read it.
Also, Oh No George (which is actually funny) used to make my son cry because the dog realises he was naughty. Now, it makes me cry because it reminds me of the time when he was such a sweet, sensitive toddler.
Also, A Kitten Called Moonlight makes me cry. I think it's the beautiful illustrations that are so moving.
And yes, Paper Dolls - so, so much that makes me sad.

Clawdy · 23/06/2019 22:35

The Christmas Miracle Of Jonathan Toomey is lovely and heartwarming.
