TV ratings - why are they so hard to find? (specifically, Years and Years)

Why are TV ratings so hard to find? Is there a go-to resource that has them?

Specifically, there is a show (Years and Years) that I think my DS would love as he loves all that political drama stuff. But despite googling, I cannot find it anywhere!

How old is DS?

whiskeysourpuss · 22/06/2019 15:43

If you're trying to find the ratings I'd guess your DS is under 15 so I'd say it's not suitable.

MeltedCrayons · 22/06/2019 15:46

He is 13, but quite 'adult' in many ways mentally due to ASD. He is a vociferous political debater and the idea of the show appeals to him. Worried about the sex scenes though!

There are a lot of quite graphic sex scenes in Years and Years. I would t let my 13 year old watch it

IkeaIsForWinners · 22/06/2019 15:51

Wouldn't

whiskeysourpuss · 22/06/2019 15:52

They are quite graphic to be fair & I'm not a prude by any stretch of the word.

The death of a main character I found quite traumatic.

DD is 17 & I wasn't keen on her watching but grudgingly accepted that she's old enough & could have watched it on iplayer anyway

RustyBear · 22/06/2019 15:54

Do you mean age ratings or audience ratings?
For the former, I can't find anything, and the dvd rating on Amazon is 'TBA', but the parents guide page on IMDB might help www.imdb.com/title/tt8694364/parentalguide?ref_=tt_stry_pg
For audience ratings, Rotten tomatoes gives it 88% www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/years_and_years/s01

DD was recommending it to DH and I yesterday, saying it was 'like Black Mirror with a touch of Doctor Who' (not surprising as its Russell T Davies) so we're planning to watch

Age ratings.

Ok, so its a no to years and years.

But in general, shouldn't they be easy to find??

There was one scene that I found very distressing, and I'm in my 40s. That would be my main concern.

There's also fair amount of threat.

There is some sex portrayed but it's consensual and non-violent.

For DVD release I expect it will be a 15.

MeltedCrayons · 22/06/2019 16:19

See that's the thing. DVDs, films, games... all have age ratings. Even the tvguide website has no ratings! Just popularity ratings.

Strange! See if I saw an ad for something that hadn't been shown yet, thought oh DS will like that...and saw it was an 18, then I would change my mind. but with NO info available...?

Common sense media shows age ratings, plus an age rating based on children's votes and another based on parents' votes. It has many books, films and TV shows. However, I think it might be a U.S. website, so it's unlikely it would have Years and Years.

howwudufeel · 22/06/2019 18:38

MeltedCrayons There is a watershed at 9pm. If you let your dc watch anything after then there is a chance they will see sex and violence and hear bad language.

RuffleCrow · 22/06/2019 18:41

So true! I keep scouring Netflix trying to find things that are 12 rated for my 13 year old dd. Why on earth can't you search by certificate?!

KindergartenKop · 22/06/2019 21:44

I'd let an interested 13yo watch years and years. It's moving and disturbing for the right reasons. It will make him think about his own world.
