Please help! Back seized up, do I force movement or rest?

I've been overdoing it last week so I don't think anything sinister is going on.... I've had lower back ache getting worse over three days to the point today I had to crawl out of bed and it took me nearly almost 45 mins to get to the loo! En suite, not mansion in case you're wondering! 4 metres. I've taken ibuprofen and paracetamol and managed to get dressed using labour breathing techniques! My question, do I rest or force movement? Worried I'll make it worse. There is an Osteopath nearby but not open until Monday. I've never been to one before but seems to be what google suggests. Please help! I'm in agony with lower back spasms.

can someone get you a hot water bottle
can you get some diazepam>?

It’s worth phoning your OOH GP as they might perceive a muscle relaxant and decent pain relief.
Then ice it and rest. Get to the osteopath as soon as you can.
Back spasms are awful, I hope it improves soon.

OOH gp for Diazapam.. I've only had it happen twice but absolute agony.
But if you get numbness in you bottom/genital area or find you don't need to pee... ambulance (doc will check that anyway) in case of Cauda equina.
Back spasms are awful!

You need to ice the area for about 5-10 mins. If you can do gentle stretches, make sure you're supporting back in chair. Back pain is just awful.

Orbison · 22/06/2019 09:54

Rub ibuprofen gel on your back and get a good strong
TENs machine on it if you can, to relax the muscles and bring them
out of spasm..
Once you're mobile use the TENs each time you feel your back going in to spasm.

Thanks so much everyone. I hadn't considered calling OOH. I'm due another dose of ibuprofen at 10:30, will see how I feel after that. If no improvement I'll call OOH for something stronger. I feel a new appreciation of being mobile. Time to start looking after myself more.
Thank you so much.

You have my sympathy - back pain is terrible! I hurt my back recently and my osteopath's (excellent) advice was no stretching but try and do gentle movement where possible to tell your back it's ok to move and it doesn't need to stay clenched.

Take as many drugs as you need to get the pain under control and I found heat better than ice.

TwistinMyMelon · 22/06/2019 10:35

The key is really good pain relief so you're able to move freely and it doesn't go into spasm any more. But yes it is best to keep moving as much as possible.

Thank you..... little update, I called OOH who saw me, they tested my urine and found blood in it so they suspect a kidney infection. I've been given antibiotics and diazepam... plus extra strong ibuprofen. Phew.... just waiting for all that to kick in now.

Glad you got some help

Freshstart40 · 23/06/2019 09:35

Thank you. I've never had any kidney issues before. It's so painful, reminds me of labour. Feel dreadful today.

Oh god, kidney pain is the worst!!! You poor thing. I've had kidney infections and kidney stones.

Take all the drugs you can find, and heat is your friend for the spasms - hot water bottle or have a hot bath. Drink as much water as you can to flush out the infection and make your kidneys' job easier. Someone once told me camomile tea can be soothing and I've sometimes found it a bit helpful but it can't do any harm.

Personally I find anything too citrus or spicey makes the pain worse, and coffee and obviously booze.

You have my sympathy! I'm glad you're on antibiotics and hope you feel better soon xxxxx

Thank you Tiger, all great advice. I'm T total and religious on my water intake. Just bad luck I guess. My one vice is real coffee every morning. Really appreciate you taking the time to post.
