Visitors shoes off in the house

IGottaSeeJane · 21/06/2019 21:25

When did this become a thing?
We've never insisted on it. My parents would never have considered asking visitors to do it for an instant.
Surely if your floor covering can't take a bit of dirt, you need to get better coverings?

Two little words: Dogs' poo.

ExsandOhOhOhs · 21/06/2019 21:33

Xyzzzzz · 21/06/2019 21:35

I’ve never worn my shoes in someone’s house

tashakg89 · 21/06/2019 21:36

It's just so rude I don't get why anyone would wear shoes in the house? I have carpets and sometimes I run through with my shoes on if I've forgotten something but I have a carpet cleaner and wouldn't dream of doing it in someone else's house.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 21/06/2019 21:37

I take my shoes off in our house and other people's homes. It's normal.

newmomof1 · 21/06/2019 21:37

I have cream carpets throughout my house and always ask guests to take their shoes off.

We never wore shoes in the house growing up - I don't understand why you would.

Queenoftheashes · 21/06/2019 21:39

I can’t understand why you’d be all right with dirt from outside getting all over your house when you could just not wear shoes.

IGottaSeeJane · 21/06/2019 21:39

It's normal - I've never done it and none of our friends/family ask for it.

Dogs' poo - We had dogs' poo back in the day as well. In fact more than you see today.

I was brought up with this, and do it myself now too. It's never occurred to me to not take my shoes off in someone's house and they don't make it past the porch in mind either. Seems reasonable to me!

Moominfan · 21/06/2019 21:42

This has been done to death. I'm team shoes off

EMacCoffee · 21/06/2019 21:42

I don't really get it either, we have wood flooring in our house so the only place we (and others) don't wear shoes is upstairs. I am clearly in the minority here but I don't remove my shoes in other people's houses either - unless the owner asks me to, but it's rare that I'm ever asked. It seems commonplace around here (West Scotland).

Pretendapony · 21/06/2019 21:46

I hate it when people wear shoes in my house and always ask them to take them off. We live on a yard and the walk from their car to our front door is where dogs wee & poo (I pick up poo but there are still traces obviously) chicken poo, mud & oil. I do not want any of that trodden into my carpet! Bring your slippers if you’ve got weird or smelly feet that you’re so desperate to hide.

Isthisafreename · 21/06/2019 21:51

@tashakg89 - It's just so rude I don't get why anyone would wear shoes in the house?

Whereas I would consider it rude if you walked into my house and just removed your shoes. I see it as overly familiar.

@FudgeBrownie2019 - I take my shoes off in our house and other people's homes. It's normal.

Nope. It's not "normal". In some social circles, it is usual practice, in others, it is not.

@newmomof1 - We never wore shoes in the house growing up - I don't understand why you would.

We always wore shoes in the house growing up - I don't understand why you wouldn't.

@Queenoftheashes - I can’t understand why you’d be all right with dirt from outside getting all over your house when you could just not wear shoes.

I can’t understand why you’d be all right with sweaty feet and virus shed from verruca or fungus from athlete's foot getting all over your house when you could just wear shoes.

These posts come up every week or two. For some reason, the shoes off people seem completely incapable of understanding that not everyone is the same and that some people prefer shoes on or that some people don't want others being overly familiar by taking their shoes off.

I often don't wear shoes in my own house. However, unless specifically asked, I would not take them off in someone else's house. If asked, I would comply and accept they have different preferences to me. However, I would consider them to be a bit anal.

Nobody I know takes their shoes off in other peoples houses or expects anyone to do it in theirs.

My DH comes from a Nordic country, where it is the norm. They have lovely porches where you take your shoes off and beautiful wooden/tiled floors which are heated so nice to walk on, but with the winter weather would be awful to keep clean.

However I suffer from plantar fasciitis so need to wear shoes, so I make sure I have my comfy slippers with me when we go to his home country.

In our home we take our shoes off but don’t expect visitors to.

Mondayblues7 · 21/06/2019 22:00

Shoes off in our house. Keeps caroets cleaner and fresher. I always have a pair of socks in my handbag (clean of course) for if I visit someone's house and I am wearing sandals. So I may take my shoes off and not feel uncomfortable.

As you walk into my house you see a mat specifically there for you to take your shoes off.

ExsandOhOhOhs · 21/06/2019 22:00

I will be honest. I think people that wear shoes indoors have lower standards Grin

happymummy12345 · 21/06/2019 22:03

Sorry but I hate the whole idea of insisting shoes are removed. I'd feel very uncomfortable with it. Comes across as very snobbish to me

TigerDroveAgain · 21/06/2019 22:05

MN: shoes off - fetch the smelling salts

Real life: WTF?

TigerDroveAgain · 21/06/2019 22:05

Aargh. Shoes on : smelling salts!

IGottaSeeJane · 21/06/2019 22:29

Of better quality, harder wearing, floor covering.

IGottaSeeJane · 21/06/2019 22:32

Sorry, but I find it bizarre. never been asked to do it and I would never dream of asking a visitor to do it. Maybe it's a generational thing?
Obviously, filthy dirty work boots come off before entering the house, that's a given. But general everyday shoes? I find it weird.

Evenquieterlife33 · 21/06/2019 22:33

Always take our shoes off in the house. Most people I know just do it automatically nowadays.

Starlight456 · 21/06/2019 22:38

I am a cm...Have babies crawling round on the floor ..I insist everyone removes there shoes

Not really interested if anyone thinks its rude or not.. i like clean floors/

ExsandOhOhOhs · 21/06/2019 22:41

Do you wear them when laying on the bed/sofa?

I think if you wear them on the carpet you may as well go the whole hog.

EMacCoffee · 21/06/2019 22:46

I've always wondered if it's a generational thing as well, I'm relatively young compared to many on here and as above am in the shoes on camp.

That said though so are my parents so it may not be.
