My neighbour's chimnea

I'm after some advice or ideas if anyone has some please...

My new neighbour moved in at the start of the year. Since it's got to summer, they have lit their chimnea every dry night for the last few weeks.

With it being that bit warmer I would like to have my 2yo DD's bedroom window cracked open, but the smoke/smell from the chimnea is coming in and making it stink in minutes. We have quite small gardens, so it's only about 8 feet away and a floor down.

I can't leave her door wide open as the landing is broad daylight due to a window on the stair wall that doesn't have a blind/curtain (too high to reach to fit one, although I'm trying to get a handyman to fit one for me without much luck. There's no way she could get to sleep with the room that light.

Is there anything I can do to deflect it out of her room, but let a draft in still??

I would just be straight with them

Are they burning rubbish?

If not then show them smokeless stuff to burn.

It smells like wood smoke - don't know what they're burning though as it just smells really strong!!

This is a bit like the threads on neighbours smoking in their gardens. It's annoying but they're totally within their rights.

I'd find a way to block the light from the landing. Some kind of mesh curtain across the door? A black out blind over the window?

You could ask them nicely. If a neighbour told me I was causing them such an issue I'd be mortified and stop using it. Maybe they could move it a bit further away? But they might volunteer to stop.

I'm trying to get a blackout blind up on the landing, but it's about 10 feet up from a sort of curved staircase so not the easiest to get to.

I don't want to ask them to stop, it's not them that has a child and I don't want to sound like I'm asking them to stop enjoying their garden, I just need to be able to open her window at night.

Would an oscillating fan pointing out of the window help do you think??

That’s so difficult. Yes, people should be able to enjoy their gardens but excessive noise, smoke etc are a form of pollution.

You can actually get lung disease from inhaling smoke regularly, so it’s not a trivial issue.
