Anyone live near Godalming college? Or anywhere that's a long way from amenities?

Couldn't decide where to post this, sticking it here for traffic.

We are considering buying a house very close to Godalming college, which is on the outskirts of Godalming itself. Lovely house, lovely street, all looks great except it's in a huge black hole in terms of amenities. 25minute walk (or 10min drive) up/down a big hill to the nearest shop, nowhere closer to buy even a pint of milk. No corner shop, no petrol station, nada.

I wanted to see if anyone lives there (or somewhere similarly rural), and ask how you find it? Do you just have to be really organised and make sure you don't run out of stuff at short notice?! We would be moving from a London suburb so I think perhaps we've been a bit spoilt in this regard. Prepared to be told IABVU and that others happily trek miles on a daily basis... Grin

My ds was there and they used to regularly go down to the shops at lunchtime. TBH, you will always be going out at some point in the car, so just pick up things as you go.

It's not that far from the town centre! 10 mins walk downhill, 15 back up. Do what the kids do and scoot down Grin

I know the area well but don’t live there so can’t give any current perspective. Coming from a 24 hour life in London, you’ll probably just need to adjust to getting to grips with the local supermarket opening hours and being stocked around them.
The hill from town can be a killer and not suitable for ‘popping up and down’ but as others have said, it is walkable.

Aah busbridge. The hill isn't that high.

Thanks for your replies. Sounds like the consensus is that we will get used to it! Going to go and view it and try out the walk a couple of times. It will be slightly complicated by the fact we have small DCs (sorry, didn't mean to dripfeed) so they make any journey more of a nightmare event, but I'm sure we would manage, as others do.

Food for thought, thanks for your help!

How often you find yourself popping out for stufff these days?

Tbh, we've discounted all houses so far away from amenities but I'd find it annoying to have to get in the car and then find parking etc just to get a pint of milk, Calpol or post a letter. Will you even be able to get around quickly enough to take DC to activities if everything is a trek?

Totally outing but I used to live there. We got used to it. There was a bus that runs (if u don't drive) but also just was organised. Someone in the family generally coming through town most days so can pick milk up. Nice place

Teachermaths · 22/06/2019 19:51

I wouldn't do it personally. I hated being a mile walk away from amenities in one place I lived and swore I'd never do it again.

If you have little ones is there anything like a park nearby? Nothing worse than needing a car every time you need to go out.

Saharafordessert · 22/06/2019 19:52

I live in a rural village with no shop, nearest amenities are a 10min drive away. You absolutely do get used to it and it’s just taught me to be super organised shopping wise. We never run out of milk!

I know the area well. With small DC it will be hard. It could take at least 30 mins to walk toddlers up or down to the town centre, maybe more.

As others have said it is a 5 min drive or a 15 minute adult walk. Lovely, lovely park a 5 minute walk away. Very child friendly.

Try out the walk and see if you can survive it. The kids will grow and when they are older it’s fab. The hill aside it’s a great place to grow up. You’re making me nostalgic Grin.

Also nice little parks to break up the walk back. Nice sports centre not too far away.
