Incorrect bill made me overdrawn, can I ask them to compensate?

I closed an account with Sky. After closing it and starting the new provider Sky billed me significantly more than my usual monthly bill. The account was not in debit and I was not expecting a bill, as you pay for Sky in advance not retrospectively.

I contacted sky and they agreed they had incorrectly charged me and would refund it by 20th of this month. I've not been refunded and now the unexpected bill has pushed me into my overdraft. I don't have a great overdraft account because I don't really use it, so I've been fined quite heavily.

Can I now ask Sky to reimburse my overdraft fee? I was counting on the money coming back in to cover everything it would have covered had they not incorrectly taken it in the first place.

You can ask but knowing Sky you haven't got much hope.

Contact your bank and explain, they'll likely refund as a gesture of goodwill. If that doesn't work take to Twitter.

You're entitled to ask and you have good reason to do so, they may say no, but no harm in asking, it's their fault

They bloody well should! Insist on it.

Thanks, I will ask and fingers crossed. It's just frustrating.

If you pay by direct debit, go to the bank (not Sky) and get it refunded under the direct debit guarantee. Take any proof you can that it was charged in error.

Then chase Sky for compensation.
