Tfl Zip Oyster card... how long to arrive?

If you ordered a zip oyster card for your child, how long did it take to arrive?

They are saying within a week online but was thinking it might be a 3 day turnaround type thing?

Is it worth getting if we're only going to be in London for a week? If we don't get one is it loads of hassle to get through the barriers?

It takes a couple of weeks iirc.
How old is your child? Nearly all Londoners with young DC don't really bother with the cards and just walk through the wide barriers with the kids. I've never been questioned. My son has one now he's nearly 10 (and tall, so looks older) but I wouldn't worry about it too much unless that's the case.

Thanks in advance.

I ordered my sons on Monday and it arrived yesterday. They have to authorise it first so u imagine a 3 day turn around might be a bit tight.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 21/06/2019 15:02

10 and 7.
So we can tap our debit cards or whatever on those barriers too?

That's a point, how old is the child? Under 10s are free anyway I think (will check)

That's quick (we're going on the 30th So have a bit of time but no passports here atm etc). Not sure the £20 admin fee will be worth it, but i think they would enjoy having cards iykwim?

It's under 11s. The fares are free but the cards are £10.

My 10yo isn't tall and looks 8-9.

I take my tall nearly 9 year old through the wide barriers using my card. No one’s ever questioned me. I’m not sure what age he needs his own card actually. Should probably find that out ...

tfl.gov.uk/fares/free-and-discounted-travel/5-10-zip-oyster-photocard?intcmp=55572

When you don't need a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard

Your child doesn't need a photocard to:

Travel free on buses and trams
Buy child-rate paper tickets (unless they look older than 10)
Travel accompanied by an adult on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and some National Rail services

musicmaiden · 21/06/2019 15:10

Yes, my 10 year old enjoys his card too.
Yes, you can tap your debit card on the yellow scanners.
Put it this way, you're unlikely to be stopped if you walk through with your kids. So don't worry if it doesn't arrive.
Come to think of it, ours was probably a week too. Just split over two weeks which made it feel longer!

The only reason DD had one under 11 was that we were in a train line, not tube and there you need to pay from 5 onwards.

If you don’t take trains don’t bother. I think the only reason for a train would be if you want to go to places outside like Hampton court.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 21/06/2019 19:14

Thanks folks. Won't bother with the cards.

As a visitor for over 10s just pop into any oyster shop/ train station and they give you a child card with a week limit on it. It has a £5 deposit but you get it back when you give the card back.
Under 10s are free anyway as others have said.
