Chicken pox and calpol

Had a bad night last night with three year old who has chicken pox. Flu like symptoms too. She refuses strawberry calpol as she doesn’t like it and in the middle of the night I could do without a battle. Does anyone know if you can get other flavour infant paracetamol? Seems impossible. I know you can get other flavoured nurofens but she can’t have that with chicken pox. Thanks.

Our chemist own brand infant paracetamol is cherry flavoured.

You can also ask Dr for calpol suppositories - or you could 10 years ago when my children were young. Very handy when sick as pop them in when sleeping. I also get a sringe and sringe in their mouth down the side when sleeping - wake them a little so they are ready to take it.

The last own brand we bought was orange flavoured - pretty sure that was from Boots (still foul though).

I used to have my eldest shot an effervescent disprol (if they still make those for kids?) - because he hated the fake sugar taste, but could cope with a bitter one followed by a cup of milk.

Tesco have cherry too.
Might be worth looking at an own brand rather than calpol. Hope she's feeling better soon

Thank you very much for your advice. Just called the local pharmacy and they do the cherry one. All the big names shops I tried don’t. Thank you. Hopefully won’t be needed but just in case...!

Do people stay in with their child overnight when they are poorly? Feeling like a yo-yo going in and out trying to make her comfortable when I think dragging the mattress into her room and being there would be easier. Is that creating more issues for further down the line when she is better? Confused

I stayed in with DS when he had pox. Do you have poxclin, virasoothe and porridge oats?

SoyDora · 21/06/2019 22:29

I put DD1 in bed with me when she had chicken pox as she was miserable with it and waking all night.
Didn’t bother with DD2 as she had it less severely and slept fine.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 21/06/2019 22:31

You can get junior disprol and dissolve it in his juice. I used to get it years ago from the doctor for ds who refused to take Calpol. I never saw it available to buy though, so ask the doctor for it

Paddingtonlikesmarmalade · 21/06/2019 22:31

I have poxclin and calamine and porridge oats. She’s just so uncomfortable with it. Perhaps I need to get some virasoothe. Thank you. Don’t mind sleeping on her floor, guess it saves going in and out but also she had always been a crappy sleeper so I would imagine will get used to me being in the room with her pretty quickly!

Also children's antihistamines might help the itching

kshaw · 21/06/2019 22:33

Tescis homebrand isn't the same taste as Calpol. Zero idea what flavour it is but not the same as

FenellaMaxwell · 21/06/2019 22:36

Calamine is no longer recommended as it’s less effective than modern treatments.

BonnieBelleStarr · 21/06/2019 22:56

This is why I paid to vaccinate my dc. I don't need the drama

Paddingtonlikesmarmalade · 22/06/2019 06:42

Thanks for the helpful comment Bonnie. My daughter has already had chicken pox, she had it before she was 1. I was told by the nurse at the GPs not to get it done as she would be immune from it. Glad you feel like you can take the moral high ground.

Fenalla, thank you, I didn’t know that. Will check out the virasoothe today and ditch the calamine.

We paid for the vaccination, actually @BonnieBelleStarr. DS has the misfortune to catch it in between the two doses. Hope it’s a nice view up there on your high horse.

BonnieBelleStarr · 22/06/2019 08:22

@FenellaMaxwell the weather is glorious. The horse is a bit whiffy though

SoyDora · 22/06/2019 08:25

Helpful, BonnieBelleStarr

faeriesandelves · 22/06/2019 08:40

I've read about head and shoulders shampoo in the bath. Check it out. Wishing your little one better

FenellaMaxwell · 22/06/2019 09:12

I think you might be a bit confused @BonnieBelleStarr - it’s not the horse that stinks, it’s your attitude.

Paddingtonlikesmarmalade · 22/06/2019 09:34

@fenellamaxwell 🤣👍

@FenellaMaxwell nah! My attitudes good. But whatevs , as the cool kids say.

FenellaMaxwell · 22/06/2019 13:37

Your attitude’s good, @BonnieBelleStarr? Do you not understand how AS functions? Hmm

By the way, this is an apostrophe: ‘ Try using it.
