Pethidine does it work

I've had a epidural, gas and air, what does pethidine feel like was it a good pain reliever through labour

I’ve had it for pain relief when I broke my ankle quite badly.
Injection in the butt cheek with what felt like a red hot fire needle, got very drowsy very quickly, within a few minutes the room started spinning as if I was really really drunk and then that was it: lights out for about 6 hours Blush
I personally wouldn’t want to feel that out of control of my body while in labour, but at the same time it was one of the best naps I’ve ever had Grin

shreddednips · 19/06/2019 17:39

Pethidine made me very sleepy and I kept dozing off in between contractions, but I didn't feel it actually helped much with the intensity of the pain. However, I cared less about the pain if you see what I mean as I was high as a kite.
I actually found gas and air more effective during contractions.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/06/2019 17:44

The best way I can think to describe the effect was it hurt just as much, but I didn't care as much about it.

It helped me relax through the pain, but dd was born less than two hours later, and stopped breathing during her first feed. Had to be resuscitated.

It was terrifying, and if I could go back I would refuse it.

Itwontrainallthetime · 19/06/2019 17:52

I had it with my 2nd dc but about 5 mins later my dc was born so not sure if it had time to work. Didnt feel any thing no side effects etc , I had a retained placenta and had ate less than 6 hours before so I had to have an epidural to remove the placenta as I couldn't be put to sleep. I didn't feel the first needle go into my spine so I'm thinking this was because of the pethidine.
My mum was given when she had my eldest brother said she was spaced out and couldn't remember having him in the end. Said she had it with me but I was born not long after so like me she didn't feel any effect.

teyem · 19/06/2019 17:56

Had it during the pushing stage with ds2 who at 9lbs4 decided he'd rather not assume the traditional arms-back dive position. The relief was awesome.

TheSilveryPussycat · 19/06/2019 18:00

It was great for me the first time. Went into a sort of brown dose, then when it wore off baby was nearly ready to come out and l was ready to help him.

Second time I was dozy, but baby was not. I think I must have had it at a later stage of labour. You can ask for a half dose (I was planning to do this, but my mind was distracted...Grin

I didn't like it. I felt out of control, spacey and disconnected. Plus the pain was still there and I started to feel panicky that I couldn't control myself. The baby slept for 24 hours, which isn't really a benefit when they are that tiny.

bowchicawowwow · 19/06/2019 18:06

I hallucinated on it. Thought DHs face was covered in hundreds and thousands and melting. I wasn't scared though. I could still feel the contractions, I just couldn't give a toss about them. It's like I was disconnected from it all.

DS ended up in distress - meconium and decelerations so I ended up having a cat1 crash section.

userabcname · 19/06/2019 18:12

Hated it. Was still in pain but couldn't communicate to anyone how I felt. Went all weird / spacey / kept thinking I was going to pass out. Felt shakey and horrible. Took ages to wear off. Would never ever ever have again.

TheSilveryPussycat · 19/06/2019 18:14

Oh and pushing stage first time was painless. There was a young doctor there who kept saying pain would be over soon, and didn't believe me when l said l had no pain!

I was induced both times so contractions were kind of sharp feeling in earlier stages before l had the pethidine.

Patroclus · 19/06/2019 18:16

If other opioid stuff like co codamol(codeine), morphine and tramadol work for yu, Pethidine should work just nicely.

Graceymac99 · 19/06/2019 18:29

I had it twice for miscarriages and once when i has severe stomach pains at 36 wks. Each time it was terrible. I had no control over my eyes, they kept rolling back. I couldn’t stand up straight as it caused my body to drop and I felt like I was off my face and totally out of control. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Graceymac99 · 19/06/2019 18:31

*Bp to drop

jj7141 · 19/06/2019 18:36

I didn't like it. Made me really sleepy but didn't dull the pain at all. I felt out of it but not in a good way. Also, for some reason I still have problems in my leg where they injected me 🤷🏻‍♀️

freshasthebrightbluesky · 19/06/2019 18:37

I loved it for my first. It was quite a long labour so was glad of the sleep and the rubbish I was spouting to dh was comedy gold. I had to have an epidural as well though because of high blood pressure and ended up with an emergency cesarean section (due to the positioning of the baby rather than the drugs).

Didn't have it the 2nd time - I had meptid and that was crap but it was a much quicker labour and the baby had been born before the epidural kicked in.

DrCoconut · 19/06/2019 18:41

I didn't like it but it's a very personal thing

Lost5stone · 19/06/2019 18:53

I had diamorphine but I think it's the same thing. It was fab. I slept through my labour just woke up to have contractions then straight back to sleep. Dd was 10lb6 too

bluedoor4 · 19/06/2019 19:10

I didn't like it as I genuinely feel it didn't work at all. Didn't dull the pain and didn't make me sleepy or 'out of it' either 🤷🏻‍♀️

CountFosco · 19/06/2019 19:21

Hated it. Loved my TENS machine, loved gas and air (felt like that 'I've had a glass of wine and feel amazing' level of drunkness, completely removed the pain and I loved that I was in control of how I needed), and hated pethidine. My birth plan for DC2 was 'no pethidine'. It was like being too drunk and having to sit in the toilet vomiting every so often until you feel sober enough to go to bed. I felt out of control, and I couldn't control the G&A as well as I could previously and so I was in more pain than I'd been before. So glad when it wore off after a few hours. It's evil.

WiltedDaffs · 19/06/2019 19:25

Hated it. It didn’t do anything for the pain. It just made me sleepy and out of it between contractions only to be jolted awake from the pain during one.

DaveMinion · 19/06/2019 19:34

It’s a disassociative pain killer. So won’t stop the pain. Will just make you forget you have it. Well that’s the idea with all opiates really. But won’t work for everyone.

Weaverspin · 19/06/2019 19:41

Hated it. It made me spacy and disconnected, but didn't take away the pain. I had a back-to-back labour with a powerful urge to push at only 4cm. It affected the baby at birth, too, made her very floppy for a while. I didn't have it second time around, and managed on TENS - although the pain was still there, it felt manageable and I felt more in control.

Bluerussian · 20/06/2019 16:24

I think I wouldn't mind trying pethidine when not being in labour, hee hee. Just to see what it's like.

Blimey, I feel like an amateur, never had epidural, gas and air or pethidine whilst giving birth, didn't even consider any of that. Once again, wouldn't mind trying the last two at a different time, to have a giggle and relax of an evening.

I was reading about 'twilight sleep', a mixture of morphine and scopolamine, which was administered to women in labour way back when. The dosage was very hit and miss and sounds quite dangerous if the doctor was not experienced in giving it. Apparently it took the edge off pain and left the woman with no memory of labour or birth - I definitely wouldn't have liked that, I wanted to remember it all.
