What traditions did you do as a child or do you do with your own children? Looking for ideas 💡

Every time we go to a new country, we get an ornament for our landing Christmas tree. We celebrate Hanukkah, Eid and Christmas (despite being atheists, it's a cultural thing). We make and eat brunch every weekend, no matter what. Not sure if those count? I worry we're a bit boring so following for ideas!

TheRedSquare · 19/06/2019 18:30

@sergeilavrov I love that you buy ornaments from different countries for your tree..that sounds lovely...

I've got a baby now, so really want him to enjoy birthday and Christmases with little traditions (I too am atheist, but like most still enjoy Christmas)

A colleague once told me she bought her children a Christmas tree ornament each year as children, then gave them to them when they left home for their own tree (obviously they only used them if they liked them) but a nice gesture...

We always buy a fridge magnet from different places we visit, whether it’s in the uk or abroad. They make me smile frequently when I go to the fridge.
We always go to the carol service on Christmas Eve.
Decorate the front of our house at Halloween and make up little packs of sweets for the local kids who come knocking.
Have a few fireworks on Nov 5th in the garden with sparklers and hot dogs for dinner.
Easter egg hunt around the house with clues on Easter Sunday.
Always take DC for their choice of fast food (KFC, McDonalds, etc) after parents evening if they have had a good report from their teachers!

@PoptartPoptart oh brilliant...I like them all that you said...hot dogs on firework night sound like a nice tradition too! I want my son to have a fulfilled child hood with lots of good memories and little traditions 😊

Movie nights where we each pick a snack/ treat and share them snuggled up on sofa
Picking your favourite meal for your birthday dinner
Story time at bedtime
Strawberry/ pumpkin picking every year
Theatre trips at Christmas

My kids are older teens/adults now but we still choose a new Christmas tree decoration each every year, watch the same films on Christmas Eve (Snowman and The Grinch), and have a family birthday meal at a restaurant of the birthday person's choice regardless of other celebrations.

When they were younger and we lived in the UK we always went to a Christmas pantomime and chose a real tree together. I still remember the smell.

Most of our traditions centre around Christmas or food 😁

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 20/06/2019 04:40

We also get a new decoration for the tree every year and usually go to central London to get one and have hot choc etc, sometimes with MIL

PIL give each of the kids a photo book with pictures of them from the year on their birthdays. This is really lovely as we now have quite a collection of them.

TheRedSquare · 20/06/2019 04:49

@SnowsInWater I don't think you ever forget the smell of a Christmas tree...we use to burn ours on open fire after which smelt amazing! My husband isn't into Christmas at all which makes me sad every year as I love it!! So he won't let me have a real tree 🙁

@ThisIsNotARealAvo what a lovely idea with phonebooks...I like the sound of that, as I do love looking through proper photos and not digital all the time...are they gifted as presents? Sorry in my reply I can't see your answer to check if you mentioned

I have a photo calendar that I've done for three years now that I keep. So each month has a personal photo, I'm too daft to throw away do will have loads when older, which I guess will be nice to look back through, as I like sentimental things.

We buy a fridge magnet and a postcard when we go on holiday. We write a bit about the holiday - where we stayed, what we did, when we went - on the postcard, then frame it and hang it in the downstairs loo.

We have a big pile of nachos for tea on Christmas Eve.

Same here - the fridge is a constant delight, it reminds me of the places we've been to.

And I used the postcards to make a few collages which I've framed and they hang in the hallway. It's nice to look at them and remember good times !

And a new Christmas bauble for the tree every year . Now my DC have left home I buy them one each year for their own trees, and they get me one.

FrannySalinger · 20/06/2019 05:47

We send the dog a postcard when we go on holiday (obviously not if he's with us, that would be stupid).

On the first Saturday in December we go and choose a new Christmas tree decoration.
