Advice on cat litter tray

What do you use to clean your cats litter tray with? I know discinfectant that turns white when added to water is toxic to cats, but I am useless with bleach - I ruin clothes on a regular basis if I use it.

Mine is a plastic tray, so I just use warm water with a little Fairy Liquid detergent. And I rarely need to - my cat is very good about not soiling or spraying the sides, and keeps everything nicely in the litter, which I just scoop out as needed and put in the compost bin (I use wood chip litter).
I would imagine a smell of disinfectant would be unpleasant for the cat and might deter her using the tray, as it would no longer smell of her.

Thanks Babdoc mine sprays all down the sides - in fact to keep the surrounding area clean, we use a large plastic crate, which my DH cuts a hole in the same size as a cat flap. She loves it - but then cats do like privacy huh? Anyway, I hadn't thought of using washing up liquid. I empty and wash it out every day so should be fine

Warm water and washing up liquid. I do mine in the shower as it is easy to clean up.

Diluted Zoflora is safe to use.

We don’t have a cat litter tray anymore but in previous years when we did Ive always used Zoflora.

Does Zoflora contain phenol, which would mean it is unsafe to use around pets?

While Zoflora does go cloudy in water, this is down to the fragrance oils being insoluble in water and is not due to the product containing phenol. As a result, Zoflora disinfectant is safe to use around most pets when used correctly.

Does Zoflora get rid of cat urine odour?

Yes, wipe the area with diluted Zoflora (we have 15 fragrances to choose from!) and a damp cloth. Zoflora will neutralise the urine odour whilst adding a fresh fragrant scent that will last for 24 hours.

I would like to keep my pet carrier fresh and clean in my car and avoid pet smells in the car. Can I use Zoflora to keep it fresh?

Zoflora is a great product for disinfecting pet carriers, not only will it remove 99.9% of bacteria it will ensure all pet odours are neutralised, great if you are storing the carrier in small spaces or using it in the car.

I've always used water and a disinfectant spray branded as pet safe, sold in most supermarkets and Pets at Home. This sort of thing:

Pet Safe Disinfectant

Zoflora can cause breathing problems and allergies. Best kept well away from pets. Foul stuff, makes me feel ill, instant headache and queasiness so what would it do to a small creature. Be aware of things causing asthma. Seeing a beloved cat struggling to breathe is a painful thing.

I also use washing up liquid for ours, unperfumed washing up liquid. And lots of water.

I use litter tray spray from pets at home

dementedpixie · 19/06/2019 12:01

Went do you need to clean it out every day? I use clumping litter so you can go longer before needing to change the whole thing

dementedpixie · 19/06/2019 12:01

That should be 'Why'

bellinisurge · 19/06/2019 12:02

I use dilute Zoflora and then sluice everything with plain water afterwards.

I just wash it out in the bathtub with hot water and soap. I do also have a spray that I got from the pet shop that's specifically designed to be non toxic for litter trays. Check your local pet shop or google cat-safe sprays.
