Hmmm big garden spider of some kind? It’s lovely you don’t want to harm it but I’d kill the fucker.

RatherBeRiding · 18/06/2019 16:24

Yes agree looks like a garden spider. The good thing about garden spiders is that they stay in the garden!! Although I did have one once that took up residence in the corner of my kitchen window for the summer. Did a great job on keeping the flies under control.

We released it back into the garden once autumn was in sight. I am a total arachnaphobe but have a bit of a soft spot for garden spiders.

Well this one is clearly out of bounds.

It's a false widow. It's got a skull marking on its back. In theory they can bite but usually hide before you can get near them.

DishingOutDone · 18/06/2019 16:48

Its a false widow spider. A bite may cause a rash or reaction (if it bites at all). Because of that if I see one I move it away from the house. Otherwise just leave it be.

TheMonaOgg · 18/06/2019 16:54

Ah I did wonder if it was a false widow. As long as it's outside it's safe for now!!

I believe it's a false widow. We had a few on the outside of our windows.

Obviously I'd seen the headlines in the tabloid press about how awful they were so when I found some around here I looked them up on various websites, and found:

  • They're very timid, they will run rather than bite
  • Their bites do sting, but reactions are rare
  • There is literally no proof of them causing harm to humans, the people who you see in the tabloid press who claim to have bad reactions are unsubstantiated.

If it's inside, I'd trap it and pop it outside, if it's outside, I'd ignore it.

I found this article interesting: www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/news/2017/december/how-dangerous-are-false-widow-spiders.html

OHGOD

Thatsalovelycuppatea · 18/06/2019 18:01

It's a false widow. Just googled some photos.

MitziK · 18/06/2019 18:33

A Noble False Widow.

Like most creatures, if you don't poke at them, they don't bother you.

Had one living in the kitchen last year until DP murdered her with overspray of the fucking fly poison he insists upon buying.

Redcherries · 18/06/2019 18:45

We popped one out this morning, was living in the kitchen. There are a few similar spiders with close markings to those. It’s a shame they have such a bad reputation.

You're welcome 😉

TheoriginalLEM · 18/06/2019 18:51

False widow. If it were anywhere i might put my hand on it/sit on it i would evict it but other than that just leave it be.

bettybluebees · 18/06/2019 18:55

I was bit by a false widow on the neck as it was in my bath towel and it didn't like getting wrapped around my wet hair. It was like a painful bee sting and came up in a lump but soon disappeared Smile

usernameuser · 18/06/2019 19:00

It’s a shame they have such a bad reputation

It is a shame because they keep themselves to themselves mostly plus kill loads of the horrible bitey flies.

Redcherries · 18/06/2019 19:09

People seem to think they are really highly venomous when they are no more so than a bee sting etc, the bad reactions are to people allergic to the venom, much like many other things.

@usernameuser I didn’t know that, I should have let her stay, we’ re getting eaten alive. I’m happy to let them be if they’re not in my bed or above it, or the really huge house spiders but my teenagers disagree!

Cravingcake · 18/06/2019 19:15

It’s a false widow. I was bitten by one a year or so ago - it was hiding in my dressing gown and wasn’t happy being trapped in there. Pain was similar to a bee sting and then a lot of ache (bites were on my arm and chest). Bite on my chest became infected so had a course of antibiotics after seeing dr. Leave it alone and it will leave you alone.
