5 yo with blood in urine

Hi all.
Has anybody else's little ones had problems with blood in urine. In Sept my little girl had thrush with blood in urine, GP stated the blood was due to the thrush. This past week, she's been complaining of bad tummy, hurting when passing urine...so took her to the GP with suspected UTI. Was told no infection, but blood in urine! We are due back at the GP on Thursday to discuss - I am thinking the worse as we have female history of kidney cancer in the family - but I just wondered if anybody else has had similar with their little ones??? Thank you xx

I would ask for an urgent referral given the symptoms, not because it is likely to be anything serious but because it needs to be properly investigated. The dipstick test is not totally reliable at identifying infection, was a culture done?

Lavellan · 18/06/2019 11:43

Sounds like GP was wrong about UTI.

Thanks for your reply!

We have done another water sample, which was sent to the lab for 'proper' investigation, and we are just awaiting those results! What is a culture?

Culture just means sending to the lab to see if there is any bacterial growth, so it shows not only if there is an infection but which bacteria caused it. The lab should also advise on which antibiotic is appropriate as many UTIs are caused by bacteria that are resistant to some antibiotics.

If it is a UTI it may be worth teaching DD about wiping her bottom front to back if she can, and encouraging her to drink plenty of water, including when in school.

mrsprice84 · 18/06/2019 11:52

Ah thank you @coronapop. Yes that has now been done...and got to get those results from the GP on Thursday! GP prescribed antibiotics even though said the dipstick test showed no sign of infection...'he wanted to be sure' he said!

@coronapop - yeh we have had that chat with my little girl! I suffered with UTI's for approx 15 years, so thought that was what she was experiencing...but not so sure now!

I had the same but Im not little! My father also had kidney cancer.

I had blood clearly in urine with no infection (although I felt awful and had pneumonia). Then blood appeared to clear and I felt better but it was still in sample I just couldnt see it.

I was given a whole day of tests. Blood, chest xray, xray using some sort of dye of my whole urinary tract, ultrasound of kidneys and urethras and bladder, bladder oscopy (cant remember the medical name).

They found nothing sinister. Apparently it happens.

It was a long, tiring, stressful, day but I was treated amazingly well.

mrsprice84 · 18/06/2019 12:03

@Kez200 thank you for your message and great to hear that your's was not anything sinister. I think when you have a history of kidney cancer in the family...anything like this, you really do think the worst!

I also had something similar a couple of months back - blood in urine, lots of scans and tests but couldn't find anything sinister. Still don't know to this day whether I still have the blood in my urine!

I am just going out of my mind with worry about my little girl, my husband is very calm and tells me I am overreacting...but there is always the 'what if'!

When DD had blood in her urine and burning when wee'ing they told us it was a UTI and gave antibiotics. We've had three rounds. Two showed infection with the dipstick but not at lab and the third showed very clearly an infection. She's been given a scan already as DR not happy with repeated infections and is now seeing a specialist after the third one which the DR said was just too many.

My instinct is that the antibiotics she was being given were not right and that it's actually been the same infection the whole time. Since she got her latest, hardcore, 7 day dose, she's been fine. Even on days when she hasn't drunk much. But of course, we'll see the specialist because being careful seems like a very sensible thing. Also, appointment is still a month away so it will be useful to see if another infection pops up in the meantime.

I think your Drs are being surprisingly cavalier about this. We have seen three separate doctors on 5 occasions so far (depending on appointment times etc) and every single one has said this is concerning and that more tests/ checking is necessary. I would be pushing for a proper dose of antibiotics and if it doesn't clear up, more tests.

Yogagirl123 · 18/06/2019 12:05

I often have traces of blood in my urine, nothing has been found to be wrong, just the way I am made. Try it to worry, but it’s good that it’s being checked out.

BlingLoving · 18/06/2019 12:06

OP - one thing I will say, is that while the Doctors are taking DD's issues seriously, it's been made clear to me that they aren't worried it's something serious. Rather, they're concerned that if they can't get to the bottom of the reason for the infections that she may experience long-term damage to kidneys/ bladder etc. Plus, of course, the endless pain and discomfort for a 4 year old is not great.

mrsprice84 · 18/06/2019 12:13

@BlingLoving Aw I do hope your little one is over it now. UTI's are awful (I suffered for 15 years without any real answers from the GP - ended up paying private and having urethral dilation due to severe scarring from repeated infections)! Fingers crossed you get it all sorted very soon!

My little girls water samples (back in September when she had the bout of thrush) and now are not showing any signs of infection - just blood. After her thrush diagnosis she was referred but then discharged and they said she was fine! It was only last week that she started complaining of pain when urinating and belly ache. Dipstick showed blood although GP did prescribe antibiotics (just in case) but we all know if they are not the correct ones whatever it is will just keep returning. We took another sample in yesterday (post antibiotic course) and are just awaiting those results...

I've spoken to them about my worries due to family history, so will see what they say when results are back this time! If no further forward we will be going private to hurry it along.

Thanks @mrsprice84. I'm hoping we're done. But will definitely go see what the specialist has to say anyway.
