If you have frequent nosebleeds...

What normally triggers them? DS is 10 and has never had a nosebleed in his life, but in the last couple of months (I'd say since about April) he's had about 6. Always when he wakes up in the morning, some are worse than others but I can't work out what triggers them to try and avoid it. He does complain of headaches sometimes, although he's a fairly anxious child and doesn't particularly like school so at the risk of sounding harsh, I never know whether he's being honest or saying he has a headache to try and get out of school.
The pollen count was pretty high here yesterday, so could that perhaps be a factor?

Oh also, the headaches don't seem to coincide with nosebleeds. They're totally separate events.

My daughter has severe nosebleeds and she has her nose quarterised every year? It actually is harmless and really works for my daughter! Wears off and needs doing each year x

Myusernameismud · 18/06/2019 08:46

Do you know what her triggers are?
Poor little thing has just been quite sick and there was a fair bit of blood in there so I'm guessing he swallowed a lot of it. I've booked him a GP appt, at the risk of seeming neurotic.

Warm weather seems to trigger mine. I think the blood vessels are just a bit enlarged due to trying to keep cool. They come on spontaneously and I just have to wait for it to stop.

Ilovewillow · 18/06/2019 08:53

I'm not a nose bleed sufferer generally but this yr has been quite awful! It's also the morning and seems to be the warmer weather which triggers. I'm also really suffering with hay fever this year which seems to make it worse.

SunshineSpring · 18/06/2019 08:57

I think DS got nosebleeds when he was growing. We got periods when we had them every few days, then none for months. Growing was all I could attribute them to. Probably due some more, as we've been bleed free for a while now.

Does your DS use inhalers for asthma at all? My uncle went through a phase of having a lot of heavy nose bleeds (ending up in hospital having pressure packing and balloon packing on different occasions) and the only cause they could come up with for it was his steroid asthma inhaler was affecting the thickness of the lining of his nostrils and they were tissue thin (no pun intended) so bled for virtually no idea.

ommmward · 18/06/2019 08:59

Can be weather related. I generally know the pressure is rising because I get a nosebleed

Myusernameismud · 18/06/2019 09:02

Nope, no inhalers at all. Considering how severe my asthma is, my DC have totally escaped it!

Probably the weather then. We moved out to a little rural village last year and we're surrounded by fields and trees as far as the eye can see, so maybe a weather/pollen combo?

I used to get really bad nosebleeds as a kid, often in the night and quite heavy.
As an adult, I rarely get them now but the past month I've had 4 or 5 nose bleeds. I think it's the warmer temperatures and hayfever for me. I take tablets and a nasal spray for my hayfever and suspect the lining of my nose is more delicate/sensitised at the moment and hence I've been getting more nose bleeds.

The gp has given him a cream to use twice a day for a week and referred him to ENT. He also gave strict instruction to take him to A&E if he has another one which lasts over 20 mins (which it did last time). He's also sending DS for a blood test because he's looking pretty pale Confused but didn't say much about what could be causing it.

Sinusitis? I've had dreadful headaches, and nosebleeds caused by my blocked/shit sinuses.
I also have hayfever and get pressure headaches, and less severe nosebleeds from that.

Myusernameismud · 18/06/2019 13:44

Funny you should mention that, I took him to the gp a while back because I thought he had a sinus infection and she told me children couldn't get them Hmm
I remember vividly having a sinus infection when I was about 11. DS did say his face was hurting today, although it's on the opposite side to the nostril that was bleeding. He's got no temp though and is otherwise well apart from being a bit tired.
Zebra have you tried sinus rinses? I do them daily for allergies and it's great!

I had lots as a child - one visit to A&E to have it cauterised when would not stop. They did continue into high school, and recall having them at times of high stress (once when teacher was bullying a pupil in classroom). Not had any for decades now.
Hope your DS is ok.

TheSpottedZebra · 18/06/2019 18:14

I was told that children couldnt get sinus Issues! I was told that as a child, after being diagnosed with migraines and all sorts. An xray showed that actually, I did. I then had thw first in a series of ops - it's an ongoing thing for me. I do use sinus rinses at the first sign of any trouble - I use the squeezy bottle .

Poor your DS. . The hurting face sounds very sinussy to me! A warm thing, Eg hot

TheSpottedZebra · 18/06/2019 18:18

... water bottle can really help to ease the discomfort a bit. But no replacement for medical advice, obviously
