Blood clot symptoms

Due to an illness, I was immobile for around 4/5 days and I’ve finally felt well enough to potter around the house. I’ve got an achey pain in a specific point in my calf. It doesn’t look red or hot or even swollen. I’m unsure if I’m just really deconditioned or if I need to be seen to rule out a blood clot. I can get to hospital, if necessary, but don’t want to overreact for “just” pain and no other symptoms.

I had something similar, just an odd pain in my calf, no redness or swelling.

I had a quick blood test which ruled a DVT out and all was well.

@sallyscallop Thank you. Had you been immobile? I literally was in bed, walked to the bathroom down the corridor and didn’t even make it downstairs. OH brought me food and I ate in bed, I was really poor. That’s what making me wonder if it’s a clot. Otherwise, itd probably not even cross my mind

OP - I had exactly the same symptoms after being fairly immobile for 5 days following surgery.

My calf had a dull ache - nothing more than that.
I mentioned it to my GP who sent me to be scanned immediately - it turned out it was a DVT.

I was started on immediate injections into my stomach (absolutely painless and I administered them myself at home). I also was on meds (warfarin and something else I can't recall) for approx 6 months.

Along with this I had regular blood tests to check my blood clotting and something called D Dimer tests to monitor the DVT.

Do not risk it - get yourself medically checked ASAP.

I had this recently it turned out to be tendonitis. The GP measured my leg to see if it was swollen compared to the other leg and felt it to see if it was hot or felt hard. I was surprised no blood test or anything but he seemed happy with those tests.

Teacakeandalatte · 17/06/2019 18:27

I am not saying don't get tested btw even if just to set your mind at rest.

Had a DVT about twenty years ago.

Had sort of pins and needles / cramping sort of in my calf for a couple of days. Woke up the next morning and bloody hell it hurt.

The GP said that whilst there wasn't any redness or swelling she was concerned and sent me to hospital. Turns out I have Factor V Leiden, which is a blood clotting disorder.

Definitely go and get it checked.

Thanks, all. When OH gets home, I’ll ask him if he thinks it looks swollen or unusual as I can’t see from this angle.

OP - my DVT was not red, swollen or in anyway visible to the naked eye.

It was a dull ache - a bit like when you press on a tender bruise.

Why not ring 111 for general advice.

I had a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lung) just over a year ago. I didn't notice anything untoward on my legs,my only symptom was becoming increasingly breathless over the course of 10 days. I was reluctant to go to my GP as I'm quite overweight and not very fit,and thought he would just blame it on that. It was my DD who persuaded me to go to the doctor,as she said I sounded breathless just talking on the phone.
Anyway,to cut a long story short, the doctor sent me straight to A and E,where I had blood tests and a CT scan, which revealed several small clots on one of my lungs. When the doctor in A and E examined me,he pointed out a small purple coloured patch on the inside of my left calf, and asked how long I had had it. I hadn't really noticed it! Blush Apparently, this is where the clot had started. I'd had no pain there at all,nor had it felt hot.
I was kept in overnight, given a clot busting injection, and discharged the following afternoon, with a prescription for a blood thinning drug (which I've been told I may need to take for the rest of my life).
I was quizzed about whether I'd recently had surgery, been bed bound,or been on a long haul flight. No,to all three. The doctors concluded that it had happened probably because I'm not very active, due to having a disability which affects my mobility.

CakeInMyFace · 17/06/2019 19:49

I had a blood clot too and also had only pain. I was immobile following a severe ankle injury that kept me bed bound in hospital for 10 days while waiting for surgery and then on crutches/no weight bearing for nearly 4 months. Despite being on injections I STILL got a dvt, and my symptom was only calf pain. I'm very fit and healthy but that doesn't matter. Was on thinners for 3 months. Definitely get checked I had a simple scan.

Achey calf - couldn’t put foot flat, calf slightly larger. Nothing dramatic! I had been curled up like a hedgehog on flights all the way from Australia though.

Zariyah · 17/06/2019 20:35

It’s really achy, think I should phone 111. Thanks all!

I had a calf DVT 2 years ago. Not iMobile, no surgery, no smoker, absolutely no reason for it.

I also had no symptoms at a other than an ache in my calf. I honestly thought I'd just pulled a muscle from running the previous day. The nurse in A&E even told me she was certain I wouldn't have one. However my D-dimer came back sky high and the ultrasound the next day confirmed the clot in exactly the place that was tender to touch. Mine was right at the top of my calf, almost behind the knee.

Teacakeandalatte · 17/06/2019 20:38

Good luck they will be happy to check it for you.

justbeniceplease · 17/06/2019 20:39

Just to put another slant on things, I have had a very similar pain, ended up in hospital 3 weeks later with chest pain thinking it was a DVT/PE but it turned out to be nothing.

notapizzaeater · 17/06/2019 20:45

Better safe than sorry - hope 111 help.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/06/2019 20:51

Hope you are Ok OP, I echo the others saying get it checked. Better safe than sorry.

Ellabella989 · 17/06/2019 20:58

I’ve had the same thing recently with a really achy calf in the same spot and lots of pins and needles too. Was certain it was a dvt as I’m on the pill and have a very sedentary job. Had a d dimer blood test done on Thur and it’s come back normal.
