Can anyone help me with a lightbulb problem?

So I’m my front room I have one main light that isn’t on a dimmer switch. All my bulbs are energy saving but the light that comes off is horrible on this light. Quite dark and dingy and I want a warm and ‘nice’ light? I rely on using a lamp but even that light that comes off isn’t nice. Plus it’s the other side of the room so either still have to put the overhead light on or fumble in the dark looking for the switch.

The bulb in there is a Phillips genie 14w. Iv tried others too. Can anyone recommend anything?

Try an LED one in maybe a warm white.

What wattage do you think?

Watts just means how much power the bulb uses. In the old days, light bulbs pumped out heat too, so the wattage was high.

Lumens is the measure of light output - how many lumens does your current bulb give out?

Can you get another lamp ? I have overhead lights so I have a couple of lamps some tall ( 5 foot ish ) and some more desk top size. Look for one's you can change the shade on ( bloody hard to find now tho) it's,amazing how much swapping a few around changes the look and light in a room

Inbedbynine · 17/06/2019 13:32

all it says is : Philips genie 14w energy saver 230 240v 50-60hz

The lampshade says Energy saver 220-240 v 50hz on it? I can’t add another lamp into the room.

I agree it's the lumens you need to look at.

Is that one of the twisty ones that take ages to heat up?

Inbedbynine · 17/06/2019 13:35

So I should try an led with 18w? Where do they mention the lumens, on the box?

OP posts:
Inbedbynine · 17/06/2019 13:35

Twisty...... you just push the bulb up into the socket and twist it to stay in?

I rent so I can’t change any of the fittings.

Do you need a really bright one? That would be equivalent to a 100w bulb.

dementedpixie · 17/06/2019 13:40

Yes lumens will be on the box. You may find that the lightbulb stand will also have info about the different bulbs

dementedpixie · 17/06/2019 13:45

Is yours like the first picture? I got the led one from home bargains. Mine is only equivalent of a 40w bulb. Depends how bright you want it to be

I’m in Australia so can’t recommend exact lamps but this is what you need to look for :

Lumens : over 1500
Colour temperature : warm white or 2700 - 3300
Wattage : 18W or there abouts
Base Type : bayonet / B22

If you look for a bulb that looks like a standard lightbulb you’ll get a better light coverage in the room.

You’ve currently got a daylight colour temperature bulb that’s only putting out 760 lumens. A warm white light will be a yellow type glow, a cool white light is a blue glow (like the jewellers lights) and the higher lumens will result in a brighter light.

Mine is like the picture on the left but Iv tried various ones and gave up as they were so expensive. I don’t have home bargains or anything near me so I gave up last winter. I’m determined to sort it before autumn though as I love shutting the curtains and lights on!

Inbedbynine · 17/06/2019 13:52

Can’t believe how cheap that bulb is!!! All the ones I bought were £7ish each!! So I’m looking for an led.... which actual wattage do I need for a warm and nice light? My curtains are very dark and cover the whole of the longest wall in the room so the room is quite dark but I don’t want to change the curtains.

Inbedbynine · 17/06/2019 13:52

Sorry I missed where wattage was mentioned!

LEDs aren't as expensive now. Have a look in the supermarket too. Think morrisons is quite reasonable for bulbs

dementedpixie · 17/06/2019 14:00

10w led is about a 60w standard bulb. You don't really get many 100w equivalents

TheRattleBag · 17/06/2019 16:27

Another recommendation for more lamps.

I've got 4 in my smallish living room, and only put the "big light" on when doing jobs in there (painting, putting Christmas decorations up etc).

Inbedbynine · 17/06/2019 17:32

I can’t put any more lamps in the room. There is no space and no more plugs! Already using a billion extension leads!
