Kondo-ing, to chuck or not to chuck...sigh

I have SO much in-between stuff. Worth a tenner but no more so ebaying is a hassle. I love it but have no use for it & have never used it. But then you go to chuck & suddenly come over all sentimental. I'm having a huge clear out & I'm wobbling about the amount going to charity. Pic below is a case in point. What are your tips?

I love Rosina Wachtmeister!

tectonicplates · 16/06/2019 21:15

I have this same dilemma all the time. Especially clothes that I can't fit into any more and I keep thinking but what if I lose the weight? And even if I don't, can't I keep them as a memory?

Wolfiefan · 16/06/2019 21:15

If you actually love it then I would keep it.

Soola · 16/06/2019 21:16

Is it a plate?

How much do you want for it?

powershowerforanhour · 16/06/2019 21:16

If you'd never seen it before and saw it for sale now in a second hand shop, would you buy it?

SandAndSea · 16/06/2019 21:25

My advice: If you love it, keep it. Maybe put it on a wall? I would focus on the easy wins until it feels right and easy to let it go.

DontCallMeShitley · 16/06/2019 21:40

Put the things you are not sure about in a box and label it 'Later'. Then get on with sorting the rest out.

When you have made more space you can re-visit all your 'Later' boxes, and either put the stuff back again until you are ready, or put it out to enjoy or use.

It works for me because there is always something else I can get rid of while I am waiting to be sure about the other stuff. I have a tendency to put things out and then regret it and bring them back in so need to be sure. It is niggling me that I gave something away last week that I subsequently found a use for and regret giving away.

Don't rush it if you are unsure. Once it's gone it's gone.

anothercuppaforme · 16/06/2019 21:41

If you love it why have you never used it? What’s the point of keeping hold of it? Re-home it vis charity or eBay and give it the chance for someone to put it on display.

anothercuppaforme · 16/06/2019 21:42

*via not vis

babysharkah · 16/06/2019 21:42

Chuck. If you haven't used it be ruthless.

Laiste · 16/06/2019 22:50

Put it on the maybe pile.

Then go back to the pile and go through it as if you were starting all over again and this is all you had.

With objects/ornaments - be honest will you ever put it on display? If not - charity. At least it'll make money for a good cause and someone will buy it and love it. Win win all round.

can you tell i struggle too and have put a lot of thought into this Grin

BumbleFluff7 · 16/06/2019 23:06

Omg Shock I can't believe the price of that plate! I'll watch that to see if it sells..

Does it bring you joy?

Is it something you want to take with you to the next stage of your life?

LaurieFairyCake · 16/06/2019 23:14

WHAT IS IT ????

squaresandsquares · 16/06/2019 23:17

You need three piles. Keep, maybe and discard. Come back to the maybe pile another time and go through it.

squaresandsquares · 16/06/2019 23:18

Sorry PP said that. I must remember to read thread

PurpleCrazyHorse · 16/06/2019 23:20

I tend to have a 6mo or 12mo box(es). If I haven't done anything with an item in that time, I get rid. So maybe park the plate for a while so you don't stall with your sorting out and consider whether you plan to sell it or display it, or you now have space to keep it boxed.

Part of my tidying and sorting is to create space to be able to keep the items that really matter. Be that on display or boxed in the attic. I don't want to be over-run and I want everything I keep to be worth the space it's taking up.

SavoyCabbage · 16/06/2019 23:21

You have to stop connecting the money you spent on the item with whether you should get rid of it. You've spent the money already.

Notcontent · 16/06/2019 23:22

I use the “maybe” method for clothes. I pack them away in a box and come back to them later to see if I still want to keep them. That works well for things that are really nice or you are attached to but just don’t use/wear.
