Hi,

My son loves looking at books with me and we have lots of books at home (we also visit the library) I feel like we’ve done all the ‘classics’ and he’s been asking for something new to read. Any recommendations for what your child likes/liked at that age?

Thanks in advance

My son is a bit older but still loves anything by Julia Donaldson, the Oi books (frog, cat, dog), Mr. Men & also books of simple & funny children's poetry.

Second the Usborne peep inside. Really lovely illustrations and cut out scenes and more grown up than other lift the flap books, interesting facts too - I've learned quite a bit about dinosaurs Grin
I bought 4 for £10 brand new on eBay

Oliver Jeffers - especially 'How to catch a Star'
Dr Seuss - especially 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'Green Eggs and Ham'
Giles Andreae- 'Rumble in the Jungle'
Simon Phillip - 'I Really Want the Cake

are all favourites in our house.

Mr Wolf's Pancakes, Mr Wolf and the enormous turnip, and Mr Wolf and the three bears by Jan Fearnley.
Never met a 3 year old who didn't like them.

BiscuitTinClarabel · 17/06/2019 20:55

Favourites with us included There's a bear on my chair, Stuck, The Bumblebear, the one about the giant jam sandwich, Mr Majeika, Knuffle bunny and by the same author The Pigeon needs a bath (resonates here!). We're just moving on from these to chapter books but still read them all sometimes at 5.

Mouse Tales by Arnold Lobel.

The McDuff stories, about a West Highland terrier and his humans, can't remember the author..

mathanxiety · 17/06/2019 21:30

Also Owl at Home, by Arnold Lobel.

CatsLikeCoffeeToo · 17/06/2019 21:34

My 3.5 year old's current favourites include:

  • Jill Murphy - Peace at Last and Whatever Next are absolute classics.
  • Naughty Bus - really original in terms of how the text and pictures are presented (sounds wanky but I promise it's a fun read).
  • You Can't Take An Elephant On A Bus.
  • Mog by Judith Kerr, and The Tiger Who Came to Tea.

I'm trying to persuade him to let me read the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes but no dice so fast.

angelopal · 17/06/2019 21:35

The hugless Douglas books are good.

Sammy867 · 17/06/2019 21:41

My girl is 3 and we have a lot of books.

Her ultimate favourite is anything dr Seuss. The Lorax is her favourite story to fall asleep to but she also loves greens eggs and ham (there’s only 50 words in green eggs and ham So it’s really simple to pick out words they can read as you follow it), cat in the hat is good as well as oh the places you will go.

They have good ideas in them; we used the ideas behind green eggs and ham to convince her to try to eat salad 😂

'Lost in the Library: A Story of Patience and Fortitude', by Josh Funk.

This is a delightful story (in rhyme) of friendship and the delights of reading that will make you want to go and visit the famous New York City Library at your first opportunity.

I really can't say enough in recommendation. It blew my mind. Some children's authors are geniuses.

.......
Having looked them up, the 'McDuff' books are by Rosemary Wells - anything by Rosemary Wells comes highly recommended.
For humour, try 'Morris's Disappearing Bag' - a warm Christmas tale.
Also recommended, the 'Yoko' books by Rosemary Wells.

..........
Books by Jan Brett - beautifully illustrated, often with Nordic or Christmas/snowy settings.

.......
'Waiting', by Kevin Henkes. Many others by the same author.

.............
The 'Hat' trilogy, by Jon Klassen.

.............
'Extra Yarn', by Mac Barnett, (illustrated by Jon Klassen).
...........
'The Wolf, the Duck and the Mouse', by Mac Barnett.
..........
'The House Held up by Trees', by Ted Kooser.
..........
'This Moose Belongs to Me', by Oliver Jeffers (any book by Oliver Jeffers really, but this one is especially wonderful.
Also 'The Great Paper Caper', same author.
.....

'Building our House', by Jonathan Bean.
Also 'At Night', same author.

PotolBabu · 18/06/2019 03:39

Thanks for all your recommendations! Lots of the books mentioned we have and love, but there are lots that I have never heard of so I look forward to discovering them! I hope his love of reading continues as he gets older, I can’t wait to introduce some of my favourite chapter books
