Just come back from a holiday and shaved my bikini line for the first time in for ever. The rash was so bad and the stubble. Going away again in July and been told if I keep shaving it untill then the pain won’t be bad and I won’t have a rash. Or do I leave it and shave once just before I go could really do with out a rash around the pool

I always get a rash with shaving despite having done it lots. I think it depends what your hair is like.

I find hair removal cream much better. You can also buy special stuff called no bumps or something like that to put on afterwards which is supposed to help.

Mine has been waxed, shaved and have used hair removal creams for over thirty years and I’ve never had a rash or an ingrown hair!

With shaving down below its important to get a really good larger and to use a sharp razor. Disposable razors are ok but nowhere near as good as a proper razor. I also use talc after shaving and washing and drying the the area and that helps keep the skin smooth and rash free.

Personally I would wait until the rash clears up before trying anything else as the skin is already irritated and you will only make it worse.

Then either invest in a proper razor if you used a disposable one before or change to using a sensitive cream.

Larger means razor

Soola · 16/06/2019 13:59

Nope larger means lather

Graphista · 16/06/2019 15:38

It's all about how you shave.

Good quality sharp razor, good shaving foam/gel, shave with the direction of growth not against with the skin as taut as possible and rinse the razor frequently.

Pat dry and moisturise afterwards. I recommend products containing aloe gel, don't have to be fancy/expensive.

I spent many years shaving various areas ignorant of good shaving technique until my ex noticed how I did it and he was horrified. "How is that not burning?!" He was army and expected to be very clean shaven every day and be educated me.

Don't use crappy women's razors either they're shit! (Even though they cost moreAngry)

All the above does not mean I think women should shave that is entirely a personal choice.

Off to buy some hair removal cream

@Graphista could you recommend a razor? I never know which to pick or what is a good one.

Soola · 16/06/2019 17:29

@OneForTheRoadThen

Try this

Thank you @Soola 🙏

Have you had a professional wax before? No shaving rash. No stubble. Lasts for a good 4-6 weeks. You could have it done the week before you go away, and then basically not have to worry about it again for the rest of summer.

KindergartenKop · 16/06/2019 19:49

I get my dh to rip those wax strips off my 'sideburns' and then I shave in the weeks in-between.

Mummoomoocow · 16/06/2019 19:59

Desperately need to know more about proper razors and the best hair removal creams for thick hair... can anyone sort me out?

Graphista · 16/06/2019 21:50

I actually like disposables, my personal choice is Gillette Mach 3 mens razors. Pivoting head and enhanced sharpness of the 3 blades aligned to make cleaning easy (rinsing off gunk is really crucial) a barber friend recommended.

I use the bulldog shave gel which I get from Sainsburys - it seems expensive BUT a little goes a long way, it's frequently on offer (so I'll grab a couple tubes when it is) and it's veggie friendly.

StarlightLady · 17/06/2019 07:25

What a pity about the rash. If you have never had it before, l would suggest it’s down to a blunt or poorer quality razor.

I recommend aplying sudocream twice daily and see if that clears it up.

The advantage of shaving as opposed to other methods is that you don’t have to wait for regrowth. I run a razor over my pubic area as part of my daily shower routine every morning.

I suggest a 3 bladed razor such as the Gillette Rasberry Quattro and instead of shaving or shower gel, use a good quality hair conditioner. The razor glides.

Alternativly, you might like to opt for an electric trimmer such as the Bikini Perfect, which you can use with or without the comb depending in whether you want short or bare.

Finally if you do go for a product such as Veet Sensitive, seriously, do the spot test properly.

Watch out for the MN Moral Police, who think that any modern woman making her own choice on hair removal is a chalice to the devil.

There is a brilliant product called Tend Skin that you can get from Amazon great stuff smells a bit but clears up all bumps spots and rashes
