Toddlers for 3 nights Ready bed any good? Or something else

Whole family staying for a long weekend. We don’t have masses of space, the sofa bed is already not huge (so I don’t think they can sleep in with their parents).
Are readybeds okay? Or is there something cheaper/ better the kids could sleep in?
They’re nearly four & nearly two.
Any advice welcome.

Ask the parents. I have a toddler. I would put the nearly 4 year old in an Intex kids travel bed and the nearly 2 year old in a travel cot. (My 2yo still sleeps in a travel cot as he's still in a cot at home.) Will they bring their own or are they travelling light?

Coldhandscoldheart · 16/06/2019 09:54

Definitely travelling light. Not sure if there’s space in the room for a travel cot as well.

Is there space to put one or both of the children in another room?

If the parents cosleep they probably won't mind sharing the sofa bed with one of the children. But I would definitely want separate beds for them.

My DD hated a readybed, far too restricted and it makes noises every time she tried to turn.

An air mattress is a bit better, could you maybe ask around to borrow one or two?

Passthecake30 · 16/06/2019 11:39

If you have to buy something, I'd go with single airbeds, and a bigger sheet so that the kids can be wrapped firmly and feel secure. Ready beds will be outgrown very fast.

tbh I would go for self inflating camping matresses.
they are quite narrow and (the cheap ones) not very high so there is no danger of rolling off.

or a yoga mat if you have one.

Coldhandscoldheart · 16/06/2019 12:36

Ah, we have a couple of the self inflating camping mats, but I had thought they would be too narrow. Might revisit that, it would be good not to have to buy things.

FWIW I wouldn't expect my host to buy a special bed/mattress for my child, I would bring something myself. If you could already had or could borrow something suitable, that would be a bonus.

Coldhandscoldheart · 16/06/2019 16:12

Which is lovely, but they’re really not in a position to bring something, which is fine, but I do need to provide beds!
Good to know about the ready bed & I keep forgetting we do also have a single inflatable mattress.
I might see about bringing ours in with us, then they could have the kids room too.

Thanks for all help, you know when you can’t clear your head enough to think?!

The nearly 4 yo will be fine on an inflatable single bed.

It's the nearly 2 yo I would be wondering about - it depends where they sleep at home. If they cosleep or sleep in a bed already then it'll be fine to put them in with parents or on an inflatable mattress / mat. But if they usually sleep in a cot (as most children do at that age) could you see if you can borrow a travel cot?

reluctantbrit · 16/06/2019 20:36

NameChange - DD slept at home in a cotbed but at a friend’s house on a single mattress in the floor. She actually slept far more comfortable than in a narrow travel cot, she outgrew ours at 18 months.

LittleAndOften · 16/06/2019 20:39

We bought DS a Thomas ready bed when he was 2 and he loved it. We've had so much use out of it and it's still going strong now he's 3.5! Highly recommend.

Wow! DS has outgrown our travel cot (95cm long) but was still comfortable in a larger travel cot we used recently (120cm long). We are going away again in a few months and I'm nervous about letting him sleep on a regular mattress without imprisoning him, I was assuming he would wreak havoc as soon as he woke up. (Atm he stays in his cot until the gro clock says he can get up!)

reluctantbrit · 16/06/2019 22:31

NameChange - I think we had a fairly small one as we travelled a lot and it needed to fit in a large suitcase. But we went away and the. I’ll supplied one when she was just 7nder 2 and it was also snug.

But also DD never slept quietly, she still prefers to have lots of room and she is 12 now. A simple mattress on the floor meant a lot more peace overnight. But she slept next to out bed, so we would have realises any havoc during the night.

DD kept flipping the Ready Bed as a toddler because she'd roll over in the built in duvet!!

We now use self inflating mattresses for our kids (9yo & nearly 4yo). They're super low to the floor so no chance of rolling out anywhere, firm and no chance of deflating in the night. You can partly tuck a self inflating mattress under other furniture in the room if short on space (4yo only obviously as he's small and doesn't use the whole length). They both have sleeping bags but 4yo's we usually open out like a duvet. I would happily put a 2yo on the floor but ideally in a travel cot for containment purposes only.

I would chat with them, decide what you have between you and take it from there. Sounds like you have enough options to make something work though.

CakeEquality · 17/06/2019 05:44

Mattress on the floor is fine. DD has always had this at MIL's. Camping mattress will be fine (don't forget a waterproof sheet though!)
