New Tax Credit rules help (three children)

I’m a little confused with what I’m reading on the gov site so hoping one of you can help!

By the time baby number three comes I hope I won’t be claiming for child 1+2 who also happen to be twins.
Will I be able to claim for baby no. 3 if by chance I am still claiming for child 1+2? Because they’re twins??

Thanks in advance!

I am not sure I thought it was if baby 2 and 3 were twins there was an exception but I am sure someone with more than a vague memory will be along soon

I think you maybe right. I’ve just read another site which makes more sense...

So I guess my question now is, if I’m not claiming for child 1+2 can I claim for baby no. 3??

The multiple birth exception only applies to multiple births after the rule was brought in in April(?) 2017.

I'm not 100% sure, but from what I gather you can only claim for subsequent multiple births because you are choosing to go against the 2 child limit rather than accidentally by having a single plus a multiple.

I have no idea if any of that makes sense to anyone except me!

I’m so confused (!)

I understand it to mean you can only ever claim for 2 children but if the second child is twins then you can claim for all of them.

Even if you had a 3rd child and you had 2 others and one was, say 21, I am still pretty sure you couldn't claim for the 3rd

Okay, I see. That’s not great news. I have grown up children and find myself (single and) accidentally pregnant at 45. It’s very early days so struggling to make a decision on what to do 😞

Oh that might be different . However if your older children aren’t at home it would be uc for a fresh claim .

Again I am not sure.

Chocamochalatte · 15/06/2019 21:26

No it’s about as clear as mud to me at the moment. They’ll both be 19 almost 20 potentially in apprenticeships... but I imagine still living at home.

If the older ones drop off the claim you can then claim for the new child. However if your tax credits claim ends before the new child is born it will mean a move to UC - but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, particularly as there isn’t a non dependant deduction for a 20 year old on UC.

Th multiples exception won’t apply in your case.
