Can a negative test after ivf be wrong?

Kk82 · 15/06/2019 09:04

Hi

This is my second round of ivf. The first round we didn’t get to egg transfer. The second round we had more eggs and I’ve had ICSI this time. Non of my eggs were suitable for freezing. The doctors told me I had a top quality embryo that was transfered and to test on 15 June.
So I’ve done my test and another one and it’s come out negative. I’ve also had brown discharge or could be that it’s my period coming on?
Has anyone else been in this situation? What has been the process after? Has anyone had a positive result after?
I don’t know if I can go through it again, financially it’s a lot of money to be given a negative end result. Feel sad. Any advice would be great x

Did they not give you information for this situation?

I've not had IVF but when we've had IUIs, we always got an information pack saying when to test and what to do. Definitely with that if you test negative at first they say to wait and test again, but sadly it just doesn't always work. It's shit, and I'm sorry. Sad

Teddybear45 · 15/06/2019 10:23

9 times out of 10 the negative test is right. Still you could give it a week and test again.

Hollowvictory · 15/06/2019 10:23

It's crap. You have my sympathies we had 4 cycles over 5 years and it is Heartbreaking. It's a roller-coaster of hope and disappointment is how I would describe it. Finally had twins on our 4th cycle after changing clinics. But I had moments of utter despair. People don't realise how hard it is unless they've been through it.
However, everyone I know who had ivf now has a child everyone. But not easy getting there

Thank you for your response. I’ve had a bit of brown bleeding too. My husbands still trying to stay positive but I know it’s failed. I don’t know if I can go through it again. We had a top quality blastocyst we were told we had a good chance. I just don’t get it. What’s wrong with me? 😞

I know, I’ve lost hope. Just can’t believe we’ve got this far and still a negative response

Kk82 · 15/06/2019 10:45

No they didn’t give anything if it was a negative response. Just said to call with the results Monday. Just don’t know what to. What our options will be going forward. 😞

Yeah I had a lot of negative tests. The brown blood, I was told, is a side effect of progesterone. I was told that true implantation bleeding (if it occurs) after IVF occurs a day or two after the transfer and that is exactly what happened in my cycle that resulted in a BFP. In my negative cycles I was told to keep taking meds until I retested but my periods would usually start before the re-test date!

Have you had further tests (eg thyroid / clotting disorder / immune testing)? I had 4 failures and then got tested and they found a lot of things wrong with me - got my BFP after a corresponding change in protocol.

OP I have not had experience of this specifically but I am so sorry, I have had ivf and I know it is a very tough and stressful time. Get them to do some more tests and try again! Ivf doesn't always work first time round but that doesn't mean it won't work next time

Kk82 · 15/06/2019 12:35

Which tests should I be asking them to do? I had thyroid checked and they said it was normal

Tolleshunt · 15/06/2019 12:39

I think the stress of fertility issues and IVF are way under appreciated. Sorry you are going through this.

Do you have a diagnosis, or are you unexplained? What tests have you had?

Rememberallball · 15/06/2019 12:58

Our first cycle we had good quality 5 day embryos transferred and were advised to have bloods done 12 days later. Results came back as >5 (so negative for pregnancy) and, when I spoke to clinic the following day, I was advised to stop all prescribed medications (aspirin, progesterone gel, clexane injections and estrodiol tablets) immediately and await my period - it arrived within 3-4 days.

Second cycle we stayed out in Cyprus for a week post embryo transfer for me to rest and relax (and attempt not to stress!!) so went to clinic a week after 5 day embryo transfer. Blood result came back 99 so definitely successful (and had been warned that, that early, we may not get a positive result) and was sent back to UK with additional medications and instructions to get further bloods done to confirm rising hCG levels.

I would presume that you need to continue on any medication they’ve prescribed until you speak to your clinic on Monday and they will advise on next steps.

Teddybear45 · 15/06/2019 12:59

They are called Level 1 and Level 2 tests. Expensive but still far, far cheaper than a failed cycle. The level 1 testing can be referred to an NHS GP if yours is supportive but the NHS won’t do the Level 2 tests.

Kk82 · 15/06/2019 13:38

I rang the nurse today and she told me to stop taking the peasaries and I have to call them Monday 😞for a meeting. I’m thinking should I try having this abroad but really am not sure

OP posts:
Kk82 · 15/06/2019 13:39

Do you know what they check for in the level 1 and level 2 tests ? X

OP posts:
Teddybear45 · 15/06/2019 13:53

Thyroid (including the antibodies panel), most clotting and blood disorders, Autoimmune disease, white cell count, karyotyping (optional though). There are protocols that can help if you have problems - for example my tests suggested an autoimmune thyroid disease and clotting disorders and so I was put on a special protocol. Got my first BFP ever in the first transfer after that protocol.

Kk82 · 15/06/2019 13:56

Congratulations hun. Thank you for your advice I will see what they say to me on Monday x

Thank you for your message. They said it’s unexplained.

Ginger1982 · 15/06/2019 18:56

I don't think anyone knows the reasons why it doesn't work. I had a successful fresh transfer, then a failed frozen transfer and then a frozen transfer where the embryo didn't survive the thaw. It's heartbreaking. I'm so sorry Thanks

JoJoSM2 · 15/06/2019 19:02

I'm sorry it hasn't worked out. I don't know what clinic you've been using but 'unexplained' sounds like you should try one of top clinics who will do lots of tests.

Tolleshunt · 15/06/2019 19:02

Can I ask why they recommended ICSI if it's unexplained? As far as I know, ICSI is usually recommended for male factor issues.

Do you know if they have done all possible tests and you are still unexplained? As that is a bit different to a situation where they don't know what might be happening because all tests haven't been done.

Have you done any mind/body work? The reason I ask is that IVF is a really stressful process, as you know, and anything that reduces that can help. Acupuncture and hypnotherapy are both helpful, and there is evidence for hypnotherapy, at least, that it significantly increases chances of conception. It also helps make the process more manageable/bearable.

Kk82 · 15/06/2019 19:46

It’s horrible. I wish it wasn’t this difficult for us or any other woman

OP posts:
Kk82 · 15/06/2019 19:48

I’ve been seen at Birmingham women’s hospital. My husband thinks we should try else but I feel worried doing this too, as they know out history. Can anyone recommend a good fertility centre in the midlands? X

We had ICSI as the Düring my first round of ivf I only had three eggs two were immature. The other one degenerated over night. So to give us a better chance we asked and they did icsi for us. I had to do more bloods after my first failed ivf and everything came back ok.
I’m not sure what they will suggest this time and to be honest part of me is thinking I can’t cope with going through it again.
I have needle phobia and hated the scans. I also have a transverse uterus, whether that’s complicating the matters I don’t know.
I was having accupuncture virtually every week and then 1 session after egg transfer . I thought this would’ve helped. I was offered hypnotherapy but didn't take it up.
My husbands trying his best to keep us both positive but I just feel no hope for us.

Kk82 please try the Priory Hospital in Edgbaston. Mr Baghdadi is amazing, I know of two other people as well as myself to use him and all successful once the issues have been sorted out. Good luck and I am sorry you are having such a tough time.

JoJoSM2 · 15/06/2019 20:25

As far as I know, then best places would be in London.
