Enclosed cat litter trays

Has anyone got a solution to the gravel that gets kicked out the door? I thought having a litter tray that was fully enclosed would keep the gravel tidy but no, it ends up all over the floor just the same and then I end up crunching through the stuff...Hmm

I find the wood chip stuff is much better, not perfect but better, also putting a chair or piece of furniture a foot in front of it keeps it contained.

Some cats really don't like them. A mat of some sort under the tray makes it easier to clean up/chuck back in the tray.

CustardOmlet · 14/06/2019 22:12

Sweep it up on a regular basis. It’s loads better than without the lid but I think my cat is just clumsy and falls out the box with the gravel!

Soontobe60 · 14/06/2019 22:12

Ours faces the wall about 6 inches away, so litter is flicked against the wall therefore less messy.

RedPandaFluff · 14/06/2019 22:24

This drives my DH demented so we've tried everything - and nothing worked. We ended up buying a handheld vacuum to clean up around the trays but sadly I don't think it's really preventable.

I'll be watching with interest in case someone comes up with a genius solution though!

Spookydot · 14/06/2019 22:39

Make sure you’re not over filling it.
Maybe a bit less gravel would mean they don’t feel the need to dig and bury with so much enthusiasm!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/06/2019 22:42

I had a top entry box. It was brilliant as any tracking stayed on the I'd. Unfortunately when I adopted a new cat, she just didn't get it so had to get a front entry one. My top entry one was a petmate one from zooplus. But PAH sell similar now. My current one is a Modkat flop. Totally overpriced. Don't bother!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/06/2019 22:43

I also use litter with the consistency of sand.

MitziK · 15/06/2019 00:09

When I tried giving the furry gits litter with the consistency of sand, I just ended up with the equivalent of Camber Sands after a beach party strewn across the bathroom floor.

Some cats dig. In my experience, it's always been the grey and white tabby bastards that enjoy booting out as much as possible. In my old place, I refined my technique so that I could half wake up, pick up a shoe, hoy it through the bedroom door, down the hallway, bounce off the wall twice and land on the top of the litter tray when that particular tabby git decided it was time for his nightly attempt to reach Australia.

The tortoiseshell is too refined for that. She just runs her claws along the inside of the tray so that she makes a sound akin to chalk on a blackboard.

The DTwatCats All cats are bastards.

Mine have a top loader too. No mess.

Soola · 15/06/2019 04:46

We moved the litter box in stages before putting it in a bath.

Then we took it away after awhile and she just goes straight in the bath so it’s really easy to clean up.

She only goes indoors if she’s shut in the house all day or if the weather is atrocious.

gubbsywubbsy · 15/06/2019 05:26

I have one and a mat that catches the litter on their way out . It works well .

mathanxiety · 15/06/2019 06:35

My cat is an enthusiastic digger.

I have a mat that catches stray litter too. I pick it up, carry it carefully outside, and shake it out onto old newspaper occasionally, then hose it down.

I also have a little dustpan and brush right beside the litter box.

MogMogMog · 15/06/2019 08:06

@Soola so does your cat poo and pee directly in your bath?

🤢

swampytiggaa · 15/06/2019 08:15

I got a tray that has a sort of lip around to save spillage. Plus I’m using the wood stuff. Not had an issue so far 🙂

FancyAPint · 15/06/2019 08:18

@soola wow!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/06/2019 08:37

My cat will wee in the bath if he has a uti, easy to get a sample for the vets that way.

I bought a robo hoover to cope with the mess though.

littlebillie · 15/06/2019 10:56

We have a litter catcher mat rubber thing from pets at home it does help
