Do you need more stuff in your changing bag as baby gets older?

I'm looking at buying a new (normal backpack style) bag as a changing bag but wondering about the size. Currently baby doesn't need much when we go out but wondering as the stats weaning if I'll need to cart around more?

Yes!
BF Newborn : nappy, wipes, clean baby grow
6 month old: nappy, wipes, change clothes, many bibs, beaker for water or milk, snacks, possibly a bowl or spoon. Few small toys.

highdoh · 14/06/2019 19:46

Not more IMO, just different stuff. For a toddler- change of clothes, snacks, a drink, wipes, spare pants/nappies, small toys, maybe a book. For now 5 y/o DD- notebook, pencils, snacks, drink, small toys. Looks like less for 5 y/o but the stuff is bigger and she needs more snacks!

Not necessarily more but don't forget the clothes get bigger!

My ds is almost 3 and I use the same bag as when he was newborn.

Jamhandprints · 14/06/2019 21:07

I'd say less, really, as you do fewer nappy changes. I just take a nappy or two, some wipes, a change of outfit, cup of water, a snack and some toys, maybe a sun hat and Sun cream. A backpack could handle it.

Wildworks · 14/06/2019 21:11

No, you realise that it could always have fitted in a handbag.

meepmoop · 14/06/2019 21:12

I have three different sized bags
1 is toddler sized that I use when it's only nappies and wipes for if I was visiting my mum or sister as they have tons of toys
1 is bigger so I can take nappies, wipes, snacks and some toys
And the other one is if I need nappies, toys and substantial food if I was going out for lunch etc

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/06/2019 21:13

I used to lug loads round, then realised most places sold emergency stuff if needed. So I'd take a pack of wet wipes, a couple of nappies and the fave comforter for naps.

Spaceman101 · 14/06/2019 21:16

I do use a handbag like wildworks said. No need for expensive changing bags and more stylish too. I managed to to fit stuff for a 3yr old and 1yr old in mine

Expressedways · 14/06/2019 21:18

God yes- snacks, sippy cup, toys, the dreaded iPad for long journeys. I use a big longchamp with a luggage strap and a fab changing mat from amazon with pockets for nappies and wipes.

Coil · 14/06/2019 21:19

Definitely. I found I needed to swap around one year and to a backpack as well.

SoyDora · 14/06/2019 21:22

No I don’t think so. But then I don’t really carry much around for mine in general.
I don’t take anything for my 5 and 3 year olds. For my 5 month old I take a couple of nappies, a pack of wipes and a muslin. In the first few weeks of potty training I swap nappies for a couple of pairs of pants and leggings. Once reliably trained you can cut down to just wipes.

SarahAndQuack · 14/06/2019 21:31

Agree, after the newborn stage you stop carting it all around. Tucked under the buggy or in a handbag.

Faster · 14/06/2019 21:35

Fuck no. 5 damp washable wipes, mucky wipe bag, 2 nappies, t shirt, trousers/joggers. All I’ve taken out since DS was about 6/8 months old.

reluctantbrit · 14/06/2019 21:41

I had the same bag for over 3 years until I converted it into the bag DD took with her for swimming lessons. I think we still have it, DD is now 12, and it is in excellent condition, just a bit faded.

It doubled as a handbag with space for a book, keys, purse and phone.

Unless we did a full day out and had a cool bag with food also for us I just had nappies, spare clothes and milk and snacks with me. Lunch was always a shared one as we did BLW and she was a milk baby until 10 months.

Bigbopboo · 14/06/2019 21:45

Less. Fewer nappies and fewer changes of clothes. By early toddler stage we just used to throw a skiphop pouch under the buggy

I'd say you need less as they get older. I took a toddler into town today to a museum - I took my handbag with my purse, phone, pack of wipes, two nappies and a box of raisins. If we were going out over a mealtime I might also take an insulated lunch bag with a couple of sandwiches and snacks and a bottle of water.
I haven't used a changing bag since she stopped her daytime bottle feeds.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 14/06/2019 22:57

Generally less as they get older. Nappy changes get less frequent.

DS was an exception as he had food allergies so I had to keep emergency food on standby. Plus he tended to explode through nappies and outfits so plenty of spares needed. I kept a back-up supply in the car.

I can remember when I had a 2yo and new baby, I used the pacapod and each child had a pod each for the things they needed. As DS2 got bigger, the size gap was close enough that DS1's things could get him through an emergency to reduce duplicates!

Equimum · 15/06/2019 07:25

We found it changed rather than increased. We tended to need less spare nappies and clothes, but snacks, water etc.

FWIW we only ever used a normal backpack. I just bought a regular day bag sized canvas one that I likes, then bought a decent sized ‘washbag’ to store the main change essentials. Having a few pockets and an external drink holder sections was also really useful.
