Which accessories for Tripp Trapp?

FlatPackPat · 14/06/2019 08:07

I've bought a Tripp Trapp second hand for my 20mo to use and subsequently DC2 (not due until Nov so realistically he/she wont be using it for a year or so).

I wasn't sure the best way to tether DC1 in though. It is just the chair that I've bought, no straps/baby set etc. Can I get away with just the harness or at 20mo will he still need the baby set thing? He's pretty agile and wriggly! I'm trying to buy as much second hand as I can, this Scandi stuff is pricey!

Thanks in advance.

We had the straps for a good while, the baby seat as well but I think we got rid of that around 20-24 months. But DD was quite tall.

We only got rid of the TT when she was 10 years though. You may want to budget buying a second one when your second baby is ready to be weaned.

Damntheman · 14/06/2019 10:12

DC will be fine with just the straps at 20 plus months! Not a problem :)

You'll want to keep an eye out though for the plastic baby seat attachment for DC2 though. And I will say the newborn seat attachment was a godsend for my DC2 at meal times.. We managed to borrow one :) So keep an eye out for a second hand one of those too.

On the plus side, tripp trapp will do them well into their teens which is nice! I have two (but do live in Scandiland).

I got one of the cushions which was a really good buy.

You'll need to know which type not Tripp trapp you have- the older ones use different baby sets to the newer ones. We used the baby (wooden bar and leather strap between the legs as it was an.older version) set until DS was almost 3. No he just uses it as a tall chair at the dining table. I can't see him stopping usinnit any time soon so we bought a second one for DC2 and I bought the newborn set to go with it- means she's at table height with us when we eat and she can see me better if I'm cooking and she's in the kitchen. Also less risk of tripping over or spilling stuff on her than a bouncer!

FlatPackPat · 14/06/2019 13:11

Thanks so much everyone for answering my boring question! You all confirmed what I was hoping - that I'd only need the straps for DS.

Was also considering buying a second when DC2 makes their appearance, especially if DS likes the chair. Safe to say he's already sitting in it proudly now so looks like I'll be buying another! Luckily the lady I got this one off has a second she wants to sell. Might have to wait until we move to buy it though as we have no space in our one bed flat for two stokkes!

Good point about the vintage of the chair though @Hmmmbop. She said the other is the older design but this is the new one.

I would just get the babyset then you won't need straps. Don't bother with the cushions they just get filthy!!

Hmmmbop · 14/06/2019 13:27

We didn't bother with straps, just th the baby set. And the cushion went back in the box, it spent longer in the wash than on the chair!

BrokenWing · 14/06/2019 13:32

We never bothered with straps etc when we got a trip trap for ds when he was around 20 months.

What we did do though, is quickly realise they are trip and also tip hazards. Trip for people walking behind them and tip when ds put his feet against the table and tipped backwards.

If possible have it backing onto a wall.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 14/06/2019 13:38

I’d second the trip hazard point (also true of the Ikea one I have at my mum’s, tbf...), but my DS used one from 5 months til now (7yrs) and has never even come close to tipping it! He does tip in other chairs so I assumed this was excellent Scandi design. Grin

Naturally also voting for buying a second for DC2 - as I say, my 7yo is still in his. (DC2 currently in the knock-off Aldi/Hauck one at 15 months - it’s noticeably inferior, but given the much bigger gap between mine I might end up moving her into the Tripp trapp when DS moves into an adult chair, so holding off buying another for now...

Mine is at least third hand - must be 20 years old I think! I love it.

FlatPackPat · 14/06/2019 13:42

Thanks for the heads up @BrokenWing. I used to always trip over the bloody Ikea legs too so at least I'll be used to that. Will keep the chair against a wall though. V useful intel.

ds was a nightmare for tipping it

FlatPackPat · 14/06/2019 13:49

Bloody hell @BrokenWing that does look shockingly easy to tip. DS is strong and wriggly so I can just imagine him doing this. Interesting to hear that @NellWilsonsWhiteHair hasn't had that problem though.

I did see that Stokke sell these feet extender things so I'm assuming this is what they're for HmmI'll see how DS gets on and will keep it against a wall for now. He's loving it so far which is great!

OP posts:
BrokenWing · 14/06/2019 13:57

oh god feet extenders will make it a bigger trip hazard

they should rename it tip trip instead of tripp trap!!! Grin

but aside from that it was a good chair and we still use as a spare for ds(15 and 5ft 9in)'s shorter friends and as a spare chair at Xmas.

Damntheman · 14/06/2019 13:59

:o at that video! I've literally never seen one tip like that before and my kids are super wrigglers. That's horrifying! I've never tripped over the feet either so perhaps I'm just a tripp trapp wizard ;)

ExpletiveDelighted · 14/06/2019 14:04

Out of interest how much did you pay for it? I've just sold mine for £20 (15 years old, no accessories and scuffed) and was inundated with potential takers.

NannyR · 14/06/2019 14:07

The toddler I look after has been using it without the bar or straps since she was about 18/19 months old. When she first started weaning we just used the bar - I prefer not to use straps until they are really necessary. We used a cheap set of reins attached to it between 14-18 months as she was really intent on climbing out at that age.

FlatPackPat · 14/06/2019 14:08

Paid £60 for one with no 'bits'. Great condition and about 3 years old I think. This is in London too. £20 is still good going for one 15yrs old!

OP posts:
FlatPackPat · 14/06/2019 14:12

How safe do you feel with her using it without straps @NannyR? DS has been climbing up and down it since it arrived and he's pretty agile but I would worry about him in it if I popped out the room for a minute (unless he was distracted by a biscuit!)

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 14/06/2019 14:14

I got all of them in the end when I found her standing as I turned around

Straps were the last thing I added

NannyR · 14/06/2019 14:21

flatpackpat she can safely climb in and out of it, she also often sits on the wooden benches at the table with her older brothers, prob since she was 20 months.
I don't really have any concerns about her using it, I'm usually in the kitchen with her but will pop out to the loo for a couple of minutes whilst she's sat at the table drawing (she's 23 months now). It got to the point where it was probably a bit more dangerous using the straps as she was so intent on being independent and wanting to get up and down herself that she was getting twisted up in the straps.

citykat · 14/06/2019 14:38

Mine has been in continuous use for 15 years. Never tipped or tripped over. 8 year old is still in it daily with the baby back seat (but no bars/straps obviously).

Hmmmbop · 14/06/2019 15:42

My son can't tip his. He's tried. I've also never tripped over it. I find it much less of a trip hazard than any other seat I've had as it fits under table like a normal chair.
