7YO Daughter

For the past few months my 7 year old daughter has started to dirty her knickers (number2) she is my 3rd child my only girl she had 3 brothers (2older 1 younger) but recently had started doing this. I don’t understand it. It’s driving me crazy. She says she thinks it’s a pop but then doesn’t even do anything about it when it’s not. She will literally walk around until we say something to her. I’ve tried being nice about it tried being tough on her. I’ve even found hidden dirty knickers in her room. I just don’t know where to go from here.

She is probably constipated and having leakages. She can't help it. Take her to the GP, let them feel her tummy and prescribe medication to sort this out.

I'm a paediatrician. She is probably constipated as PP says. She can't help it, it's involuntary, she isn't doing it on purpose, it isn't a behavioural problem. Dont punish her or embarrass her for this

Take her to her GP. Increase her water intake, use laxative and/or suppositories to clear the blockage and when current, acute problem is solved, increase fibre.

As a side note, explain to her that it's important to wear clean underwear to keep her skin, her vulva and her bum healthy and comfortable and to prevent unwanted smells. While she is constipated it might be a good idea to carry spare pants everywhere and some wipes for accidents.

This is a really common problem, don't make a deal out of it.

Easy ways to increase fibre in kids diets: weetabix, kiwi, prune juice (initially diluted until they get used to the taste). Food to avoid: bread, pasta, cheese, biscuits.

Suppositories are generally poorly accepted in this age group but osmotic laxatives like Casenlax, work very well and are well accepted and effective for disimpaction and for long term use. Side effects: wind, and increase in leakage initially which is normal and WILL pass. Maintenance during at least six months is recommended to restore bowel tone. Dietary changes are cornerstone of management and should be long term to prevent recurrence.

Good luck, it's very frustrating at first, but it is absolutely a medical condition and not your daughter being naughty. You will get through this, with time and patience and some lifestyle changes.

Thank you. I never thought of constipation before, But the poo in her knickers isn’t hard it seems quite loose. She’s always drinking water. Doesn’t really drink anything else. I did think about taking her doctors but it didn’t seem like a medical thing so didn’t want to take an appointment if it wasn’t necessary, thought it was just a thing she would grow out of but think it’s been about 4 months now. I will ring the doctors tomorrow

It can happen that watery stool leaks out around larger compacted stool so she can have soft poo and still be constipated.

Nobody wants to crap themselves so the docs is the best choice.

I would day constipation too. Overflow is when liquidy poo makes it round the solid poo that isn't shifting. See a GP, movicol is very good.
