114 votes first ballot, say ahead of rivals .
Is it decided already?

I'd also say I strongly suspect the Boris who will be prime minister will be a lot more moderate than the Boris who attacks the prime minister.

He is going to play hard ball with Brussels, and scare rhe shit out of people as he does it, but looking at his responses it seems he's maybe not quite as hard ball as we would think. For example I don't think he wants to leave with no deal. He wants what Teresa May wanted, MPs to get behind a deal. And he wants to fuck with Brussels till they give more concessions, so he can get the deal through.

Whether he can do it or not is a different story. But I think if we get it, there will be a bumpy ride as he plays hard ball.

At least we won’t have the he’s a remainer excuse

He has to do Brexit well, just as he thinks he can

Singinglily I think that is why our MP has voted Boris.

I have emailed him to tell him I am not angry, just disappointed. A useless gesture, but momentarily amused me.

SingingLily · 13/06/2019 15:31

😂Gimmethecoffee, I'm fairly sure my MP is sick and tired of hearing from me!

WellGoshDarnIt · 13/06/2019 15:39

Esther McVey's voting record. It speaks for itself really. She consistently votes against equal rights for same sex couples as well as anything that might make the lives of poor people a bit easier, (she was a big supporter of the 'bedroom tax').

He's going to continue to threaten to not pay the 39 billion and leaving with no deal . Which is going to send macron nuts. He desperately needs us to pay it. He's got enough problems in France without having to stump up billions of the French people's taxes and pay it to thr eu instead of us, it could even take down his Presidency. France will literally go into revolt and also likely demand to leave. It would be disastrous for macron.

It's a huge bargaining chip and Boris knows it. Macron is the one who has being making this hard for us, as he doesn't want France to also leave. Germany and France will really struggle if they need to cover our financial contribution. It's huge.

Boris is going to use this if he gets in as his way of getting further concessions. He will threaten We will leave with no deal and not pay.

And that can go one of two ways. Either he will get thr concesssions and we will leave with a deal. or he won't, and it's going to lead to a deep and hugely unpleasant divide with the eu, which will hugely damage both sides for years to come.

Either way If Boris gets in, we aren't going to see Teresa mays conciliatory approach. We are going to see something much tougher and much scarier.

That's exactly what people said about Trump - oh, it's a populist act, he won't be like that in power.

Look at Boris in the foreign office. He's not pretending to be an incompetent blusterer, and he's not pretending to be offensive and incapable of properly conducting himself in high stakes situations. That's all for real.

MarshaBradyo · 13/06/2019 15:45

Very interesting Bluntness

Iwannasnack · 13/06/2019 16:01

I agree newaccount. I’m not sure what he’s brought to his previous roles that makes people see him as pm material.

MeltedCrayons · 13/06/2019 16:02

Where can you see which way your mp voted? For this i mean, not their general voting record?

LarkDescending · 13/06/2019 16:02

Grim, isn't it. The Tory faithful won't bother with a critical evaluation of hustings performances, they'll just fill in their postal votes and usher him in to brown-nose Trump and pick up where he left off with insulting everyone else we deal with as a nation.

If we could be more diminished and humiliated on the world stage that we are already, he's about to be the architect of it.

Iwannasnack · 13/06/2019 16:03

Think it was a secret ballot

Allthemistakesmade · 13/06/2019 16:06

I honestly can't believe this is happening, utterly depressing

onalongsabbatical · 13/06/2019 16:06

He will of course almost inevitably get to the last round.
Then it goes to THE WHOLE Tory party. 130,000 members. So at that point, anything can still happen.

tuxedocatsintophats · 13/06/2019 16:23

I mean, seriously, like Hunt or Gove are any better?

Iwannasnack · 13/06/2019 16:27

Yes I saw that gutrot!

Carpediem1 · 15/06/2019 08:28

Good thread. Perhaps naively, I assumed BJ is so unpopular with MPs because of his record in office (and because they have met him) that only a few nutters would vote for him. I have no faith at all that the party membership will look at the evidence on him and vote accordingly. I think if (when) he becomes PM, anything could happen. His track record on honesty speaks for itself. The only certainty is that whatever he does, it will be to benefit Boris Johnson. It's so depressing. How did we get here?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 15/06/2019 14:21

@WellGoshDarnIt thanks for the McVey link.
I read the wiki page on Boris on somebody's recommendation
It was scary stuff.
With regard to going to the vote of Tory party members I was always under the impression that he was loved by the masses because of his personality.
I like Ken Clarke's comment about keeping in mind that this wasn't a celebrity thing and we weren't voting for the Great British Bake off, this was about the leader of the country.
