Superfluous words

Why use one word when you can use more? Words that used to stand alone now have another word tagged on that serves no purpose.

We used to have skills, we now have a skill set.
We used to fry, we now fry off.
We used to train, we now train up.
We used to have a price, we now have a price point.

I’m sure there are many more. Just why?

To piss people like me off?

Babdoc · 12/06/2019 22:11

The one I hate is “return back”.
Return means “to come back”.
So people who say this are coming “back back”. Ridiculous!

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/06/2019 22:18

Prolixity.

DougalsBlueJumper · 12/06/2019 22:30

Not just fry off, but pan fry. What the hell else does a person fry their food in?

TheJoxter · 12/06/2019 22:34

Yes! ‘Pan fry’ ‘oven bake’

Chocmallows · 12/06/2019 22:35

We'll have tuna fish instead of tuna next blaming American TV

djtinyt · 12/06/2019 22:36

Revert back Envy

ItsInTheSpoon · 12/06/2019 22:36

Park up - instead of park

ApocalypseNowt · 12/06/2019 22:40

Pre-prepare. Just no.

OneDayIWish · 12/06/2019 23:03

To be honest. Why would anyone say this, aren’t they usually honest?

WhiskersPete · 12/06/2019 23:09

General consensus really bugs me!

WhiskersPete · 12/06/2019 23:09

Also close proximity!

Chocmallows · 12/06/2019 23:11

Oneday "To be honest" annoys me too. I feel like saying "well what lie were you about to say?"

Smidge001 · 12/06/2019 23:16

I REALLY hate 'pre order'. Seriously piases me off.

If you order something, it's because it's not available to you right here and now. Ie it's already in advance. I don't have to 'pre' order my tickets thankyou. I can just order them. And they'll arrive when they're ready!!

BlackPrism · 12/06/2019 23:51

@DougalsBlueJumper would assume pan fry means not deep fried.

Price point is a general area of price rather than exact.

You train up for something, if without a goal (match, race) you just train.

Skill set is something applicable to a skills area - so my job skill set, whereas I also have skills in cooking, cleaning, yoga which aren't a part of my skill set but are skills I possess.

Fry off= begin or end with frying but not A dish cooked entirely through frying.

Am aware I'm being a dick but they all mean different things to me 😂

Revert back is just wrong.

Soola · 13/06/2019 00:36

Foreign in foreign import.

If it’s an import it’s going to be from overseas so no need to add the word foreign.

Soola · 13/06/2019 00:38

Free gift. A gift is something you get given without paying for it or exchanging anything so the word free is unnecessary.

DougalsBlueJumper · 13/06/2019 01:08

@BlackPrism, fair point, but not sure I remember the last time I was offered deep fried salmon, rainbow trout or, indeed, deep fried steak.

Frazzledandfedup · 13/06/2019 01:34

Work colleague

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 13/06/2019 01:36

“Lived experience” usually used by the woke bros living their best lives.

cheeseislife8 · 13/06/2019 01:54

Carrier bag. What the fuck else is a bag for?

powershowerforanhour · 13/06/2019 02:57

Just why? Instead of Why?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2019 08:00

Outside 'of' really irritates me, as in 'outside of the town centre.'

'Off of' is even worse. 'I told him to get off of the sofa', etc.

Not to mention 'pretty unique', 'very unique', etc.
Something is either unique or it isn't.

Oh, and the endless superfluous 'So' at the beginning of a sentence.
So often followed by 'me and X...'.

floramcdougal · 13/06/2019 08:22

For free

Just free is sufficient.

AlexaAmbidextra · 13/06/2019 08:28

Just why? Instead of Why?

😂. Ha! I did that on purpose.
