The people who boycott the BBC are the same ones that think the BBC is only the TV channels and that everyone over 75 will lose their free license
Well, the BBC might not only be the TV channels, but that’s the reason there’s a licence fee, you don’t need it for radio. And maybe not everyone over 75 will lose it, but some will, and some others, who may still be eligible for it, won’t claim for various socio economic reasons. So, what will a boycott achieve? Publicity basically. And, from that, will stem some people cancelling their licence or not renewing, and not just the over 75s. The BBC, and their marketing dept., might have forgotten how many options are available to people, these days, at their peril. At the moment, even if you never watch the BBC, you have to purchase a licence to watch other terrestrial channels, soon, someone will come along with a way of making it provable that you can watch other TV channels (free of charge, because of their advertising) and cannot, absolutely cannot, access the BBC channels. Then the BBC are fucked. There will be a way to challenge the licence mandate. So, instead of collaborating in their own demise, why not tap in to their own advertising channels? Frankly, the BBC already ‘advertise’ their own shows. These shows are often made in collaboration with external production companies. Their own films, ditto. And the amount of exposure and ‘advertising’ different music artists and labels get in various TV and radio shows is immense. So, start charging for it, BBC. Drop the licence fee for everyone, forever, or face extinction. Too much competition, frankly. Beginning of the end.
