Chicken pox (again, sorry) - does this look normal?

I’m sorry, I have no frame of reference. I’ve tried looking at photos of the different stages but the ones on the NHS site look nothing like this.

We are on day 6 since the first blisters appeared now, I think he’s still having a few new ones. He didn’t really get the red dots before the blisters appeared, blisters just keep popping up out of nowhere.

I have a GP appointment for myself first thing tomorrow so if necessary I can call and tell them I’m bringing him instead (just so they can put him away from other patients while waiting).

He had insanely high temps and was very upset and lethargic yesterday but that settled - spoke to the GP who said bring him in today if still very unwell but he hasn’t seemed too bad.

Sorry if I seem overly anxious - his twin had sepsis in NICU so infections are something that worry me. I don’t know if these look infected or just.... strange? They’re so dark red. And all those small red dots on his leg are new I think.

Cp often get infected unfortunately

Hazlenutpie · 12/06/2019 19:17

I think some of the pustules are infected. Definitely see the GP.

SinkGirl · 12/06/2019 19:17

Thank you - that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure if this was just what they look like.

Will take him first thing

I apologise if you already know this but no ibuprofen for temp or pain with chicken pox x poor little love x

ReganSomerset · 12/06/2019 19:25

Yep, looks infected. Poor little mite. Hope he feels better soon x

Burpsandrustles · 12/06/2019 19:30

My baby caught it and had similar pattern of not many spots but they went deep.

I wouldn't wait. . mine was put on antibiotics straight away when her temp soared and spots infected. Then of course she pucked those up, so more wait to get ones she could keep down.

It's a bastard and baby's dont necessarily develop immunity.

Burpsandrustles · 12/06/2019 19:32

I think personal lly in cases like this a doctor should always see the baby.

Any infection that's spreading should be sorted asap.

Call out of hours or 111 and say looks infected want to be seen and antibiotics Etc.

WatcherOfTheNight · 12/06/2019 19:42

They look like the infected spots Ds had .
Quite a few look infected so I'd go to out of hours with a baby tbh .

Bathing in a good few handfuls of bicarbonate of soda may soothe them once you've got antibiotics.

SinkGirl · 12/06/2019 19:45

No don’t worry - I haven’t given any ibuprofen. On the phone yesterday the GP told me I could alternate calpol and nurofen and I didn’t respond very well - he was obviously just rattling off normal advice for high temps but it’s shocking that some GPs still say things like that without thinking.

Yesterday his temp went very high but it came down by the time the doctor called back and he’s seemed okay since. He did say I could take him in last night but he had perked right up, so I figured they wouldn’t do anything.

Have called 111 and waiting for a call back - his temp is totally normal, no other signs of infection at present apart from the appearance of the spots so I’m not sure whether they’ll do anything but will see.

Sorry, should add he’s 2.5 so toddler rather than a baby - hard to tell from that photo!

OP posts:
Fairylea · 12/06/2019 19:49

I would want him seen by someone. You’ve done the right thing ringing 111. They look very, very sore Sad

SinkGirl · 12/06/2019 19:55

It’s difficult because he is autistic and non verbal so can’t communicate what he’s feeling. Yesterday he seemed very unwell for a few hours when his temp shot up so I called the GP - took two hours for them to call back, by which time he was perked up, smiling, normal temp etc. They ran through all the symptoms of sepsis etc and said he sounded fine but they’d see him if I wanted. I said no, he seems okay, will call in the morning if he’s still unwell.

Today he’s seemed fine - alert, normal temp, just itchy really. Not any tears at all or in distress.

Don’t know what to think now!

Just been through all this, out of three dc only one needed antibiotics although a few on dd looked suspicious but I kept on with the salt baths and they were OK. I took regular photo of hers to keep an eye on to see if they got worse. One of my ds was very poorly with high temps. In your case as your worried I'd ring 111 and they'll get you an appointment tonight?

ReganSomerset · 12/06/2019 20:04

I'd wait until you can see the GP unless his temperature spikes again and he's not himself. DD had two that looked like those ones and was prescribed an antibiotic cream. They took ages for the scabs to fall off and it remains to be seen whether they'll scar. Make sure you're familiar with the signs of encephalitis, meningitis and sepsis. Watch carefully and if you see any signs of those, straight to A and E.

SinkGirl · 12/06/2019 20:28

They called me back (quite quick compared to when I’ve called for myself!) - they went through the questions and they’re not concerned, he has no signs of being unwell at the moment apart from how the spots look and there’s no weeping or discharge.

They’ve made sure I’m aware of the signs of sepsis etc and to call back if he worsens. If he was like he was yesterday I’d insist he was seen tonight but as he’s asleep and settled I will just keep checking on him and take him in the morning or call them back if he deteriorates (or obviously go to hospital if he has signs of sepsis).

Thanks everyone. Hopefully just some antibiotics needed and he stays well!

Yikes, no idea what happened there!

He’s currently babbling and pogoing in his cot so I think he’s fine for now!

Seen GP - she’s prescribed some antibiotic cream but doesn’t think he has a full blown infection, just a particularly nasty case.
