I have no money but want to learn something

So mostly due to DS2's swimming I have no money but a lot of wasted time. He swims 10hrs a week and due to his age I have to be in the building with him. There is free wiki and power points for laptops. I think I could be learning something rather than just sitting here on Mumsnet. But what? And how? Criteria is it has to be free and not bookkeeping because I tried to learn that before and it was a disaster!

OU have lots of free courses you can try.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/06/2019 18:46

Try FutureLearn - free OU courses or Coursera.
Google MOOCS & that should bring more up but check they're free first.

You could try the Coursera website for free mooc courses - I’m doing one at the moment to stop my mind from atrophying while on mat leave! All sorts of courses on different topics provided by universities worldwide

The quality is really good too. I've done two so far and one (admittedly an accredited one I paid £50 for) was harder than some of my MSc units.

Lalallama · 12/06/2019 20:14

Yes definitely FutureLearn or Coursera. You can pay to upgrade and get certificates but the majority are free.

HollowTalk · 12/06/2019 20:19

Look at the OU. If you are on a low income then I think you can take modules for free.

Get the free version of Duolingo and learn a new language?

What are you good at and what interests you? Look online and do forget the library as well as the internet.

Another vote for Future Learn!

nikkylou · 12/06/2019 21:06

Does it have to be a laptop based activity? Would something like knitting or crochet appeal? Appreciate there is some cost involved.

What about sketching or drawing in what ever art style appeals?

Without meaning to sound rude, do you have a job? If so, is there something that would help at work? If not, are you looking to start in the future, and is there a new career path you want to explore? If neither, something handy, say Photoshop to edit you family photos I'd suggest photography but I'm assuming the edge of the pool doesn't offer much inspiration...

PlinkPlink · 12/06/2019 21:09

Try Alison.

I think you only pay for the certification at the end of the learning course but you're free to stimulate your mind with stuff on there until that point.

They've got all sorts.

You can learn programming quite easily and it pays well
