Where can 4 adults go in early January for a few days from the U.K. that’s guaranteed snow, has nice food and is interesting? I’m desperate for a log cabin.....but that’s not essential, suppose Sad
We don’t like skiing!

Wilderness of Scotland?

Nearlyadoctor · 12/06/2019 17:06

Levi in Finland - no need to ski but lots of other winter activities if you want them, otherwise just chill, swim, relax - walk and stop at the Kota’s ( small log cabins) with fires and hot berry juice at the ready inside. It’s like Narnia - beautiful

Norway. So beautiful.

heidihigh · 12/06/2019 17:12

Iceland! We went in January and it was stunning

Soola · 12/06/2019 17:13

You definitely wouldn't be guaranteed snow in the highlands in January. Last time I visited Lewis it was the first week of Feb and it was gorgeous

BertrandRussell · 12/06/2019 18:21

Thank you! The Highlands are our because they are a familiar haunt of ours, and one of us often works there and another recently graduated from Edinburgh so would prefer not Scotland! I would love Iceland, but worried that it’s mega expensive.......

Oberstdorf in Southern Bavaria.

I went to Iceland in mid December a couple of years ago. No snow at all, just drizzle and fog. I took thermals and big scarves and so on, and it turned out to be warmer than at home! Still an amazing place to visit, but if you definitely want snow I’d look elsewhere.

rollingpine · 12/06/2019 19:05

Phew - for a moment there I thought this thread was going to be about today's weather...

x2boys · 12/06/2019 19:58

Me too rolling😂 thankfully not!

Meltedicicle · 12/06/2019 20:04

Another vote for Finland. We went in December and it was amazing. Saariselka where we stayed had a massive toboggan run that was super fun and we did husky dog riding and snowmobile northern lights safari.

PestoSnowissimos · 12/06/2019 20:07

Sorry, I can’t get past the fact that you don’t like skiing 😮😮😮

Ontario. Snow guaranteed (in fact, probably too much of it). Ottawa is a great city with lots to see and cracking restaurants.

Dds both went on a school trip to Iceland at the end of January. The kit list was extensive. We bought coats more expensive than my first car in a desperate bid to keep them warm and safe from hypothermia.
They sent pics of themselves to me, hoodies tied round their waists - no sign of any coats - they said it was endless drizzle for days and days on end Grin
Oh, and I don’t blame you for not wanting to go skiing, I went twice and will never ever go back as long as I live. Hated it, faffy, so many layers and so much preparation, particularly when you’re a crap skier like me - all seemed like an emperors new clothes type of holiday!!

FFS, Op.
I thought you were going to say. There was bastarding snow on the way.AngryGrin

EatenByDinosaurs · 12/06/2019 20:49

I agree with Finland too, I lived there for a while and the northern lights are the best I've ever seen, absolutely magical how they reflect across the frozen lakes. My birthday is in January and the northern lights really made it for me Smile

BertrandRussell · 13/06/2019 08:20

Sorry I scared people about the weather prospects! Grin

Leaning towards Finland now- must do more research. All suggestions gratefully received...

Highly recommend Inghams travel for Finland -under Lapland on their website.

Damntheman · 13/06/2019 11:28

If you go with Norway make sure you go inland enough, or north enough. Trondheim for instance will PROBABLY have snow in January, but it isn't a guarantee (resident).

I'd suggest Åre. Lovely place in Sweden! Finland is also gorgeous.
