Is it me or do bananas and apples taste of very little nowadays?

I regularly buy them both, but sometimes wonder why I bother as they are so tasteless. Is it the forced ripening of bananas?

I agree about Apple's but the bananas I buy are still very flavoursome. Not so much the ones from the supermarket though. It's carrots that are a bit shit now. It's not often you'll get very tasty carrots.

I think all fruit has nosedived - not bought a peach or nectarine for years as they are dry and tasteless :(

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 12/06/2019 14:08

I bought some huge juicy nectarines this week. I waited until they were nice and soft and ripe.

It was like biting lemons! Yuck. So sour. I miss good fruit.

One tip though, refrigerated strawberries and raspberries have almost no flavour. They need to be served room temp. I could never figure out what was wrong until a friend told me that little (pretty obvious now) nugget.

Agree too with the carrots. They are best from the greengrocers than the supermarket.

Not just you,, I've thought the same.

FadedRed · 12/06/2019 15:03

Tasteless fruit is so disappointing, and so random.
I got mango’s last week, two were meh, the other just OK.
Got apples (Cox’s) and flat peaches this week - delicious! The apples are the best I’ve tasted for ages - shame that they have come from New Zealand. I know it’s too early for UK, but NZ is such a distance.

MiraculousMarinette · 12/06/2019 15:42

Carrots, apples, tomatoes, peaches, pears... All taste of nothing, I agree.

I was just talking about this yesterday. Carrots are tasteless at the moment. Tomatoes too. I also find that radishes which are supposed to be a bit peppery are also bland and watery. It’s awful!

Stumpedasatree · 12/06/2019 18:48

Peppers too. Courgettes. Some grapes and clementines. Why is this though? I think I'm going to stop spending money on fruit as it's not exactly cheap to buy for zero taste!

I find that small apples are better. I buy tomatoes on the vine and keep them in the fruit bowl.

Kazzyhoward · 12/06/2019 18:59

I went right off fruit and veg a few years ago as I found most of it pretty bland and tasteless.

Then I went on holiday to Cyprus and couldn't get enough - salads for most meals, lots of fruit. It was heavenly. It all tasted so much fresher and tastier than the bland rubbish we get in the UK.

It's all the importing/chilling/transporting that ruins the stuff we have in the UK. I'd far rather we just ate what we can grow more locally in each season and accept that we can't have strawberries in the middle of winter.

Geraniumpink · 12/06/2019 19:00

i’ve had some very lovely soft fruit from Sainsbury’s recently. Ready to eat nectarines were gorgeous. Our indoor market fruit stall is very good for apples.

Babyduck2 · 12/06/2019 19:06

Carrots taste watery recently, I've started buying tomatoes on the vine as they are much tastier. Apple's, I agree, they are tasteless but I still eat them all the time! Bananas are ok, I get them from Asda and never had a problem.

Oblomov19 · 12/06/2019 19:15

Same. I'm often shocked how poor many fruits are, and have got worse, in the last few years.

TeachesOfPeaches · 12/06/2019 20:17

Made a tomato salad the other day and it tasted of nothing at all.

MiraculousMarinette · 12/06/2019 20:44

This becomes especially evident after visiting other countries. I just came back from Black Sea and tomatoes there were to die for! I ate salads there for pretty much the whole week with utter pleasure.

BentBaastard · 12/06/2019 20:44

I buy expensive apples when I fancy an apple just so I can taste something.

Ripe bananas are fine but have to be very ripe.

Pokul · 12/06/2019 21:13

I sell fruit and veg boxes so I have this conversation lots!
Mass producers grow for what supermarkets want which is longtivity in terms of storage, disease prevention and just sheer volume vs taste, the sheer amount you have to pump out as a supermarket supplier is insane especially when lots of it ends up in the bin due to food waste.
Also people refuse to eat seasonally or locally, I have people saying mine tastes better then the supermarket then in the same sentence asking why I don't have tomatoes in December or pineapples any month Hmm. If youre eating out of season it's going to taste bland. If your eating stuff from the other side of the world its going to taste bland or unusual as it won't of been picked at optimal taste levels.
To get better tasting stuff, eat locally, in season and small produces are more likely to have unusual varieties that have more taste, but you will be paying more because of the low amount of produce and different varieties not having as much disease prevention etc.
Tomatoes are always going to taste better in southern Europe as they have the better climate for growing them locally for a longer season and fair few European countries are better at seasonal eating then us.

frenchonion · 12/06/2019 21:19

Tomatoes piss me right off nowadays. Like bloody water!

Livingthedream12345 · 13/06/2019 06:44

Organic carrots and bananas have a much better flavour.

Skyejuly · 13/06/2019 07:17

I've gone right off fruit :(

Deathraystare · 13/06/2019 07:23

I think most fruit and some veg is tasteless. However, I stayed at my Aunt's recently and she had some gorgeous apricots. I think she got them from the greengrocer rather than a supermarket. I also had some Braeburn apples recently that actually had a taste.

I never bother with any 'ripen at home' fruit. They never ripen nicely but go from hard to 'off'.

LittleKitty1985 · 13/06/2019 07:23

Bananas are all clones so the taste can't have changed. Perhaps you're just noticing that you're losing your tastebuds - it happens to us all as we age.

SamBeckett · 13/06/2019 08:12

I do not like bananas so I haven't notice the change in them .
The only apples that have any flavour are braburn they are worth paying a little extra for.
I bought a grapefruit the other day and that had very little taste too.

Unshriven · 13/06/2019 08:16

Most fruit I buy is fine. I like those big, dark red, shiny apples.

I did have a banana that tasted mildly of vinegar the other day, that was unpleasant.
