Old fashioned items in your house?

jennymanara · 11/06/2019 17:03

I have realised from another thread that I have lots of old fashioned items in my house. These include -

net curtains
curtains
a nest of tables
a landline
a magazine/newspaper rack
a dining table and chairs

What about you?

I have a nursing chair that was my great grandmothers originally - someone cut the legs down to make it a low chair and now it’s too low for anyone to reasonably be expected to get up from unless they’ve got exceptionally good knees!! It’s last use was as my DF’s clothes horse and it has massive sentimental value to me.

Also have
1960’s green gravy boat and dish
1960’s Pyrex casserole dish in white with black snowflake design on
Set of 3 different sized earthenware casserole dishes in dark blue
(these were all wedding presents to my parents)
1960’s dinner table and chairs (gift from my aunt and uncle over 20 years ago)
1960’s Schreiber chest of drawers that my parents bought when my sister was born.

I have an old fashioned bean slicer and weighing scales with the weights you add. And I use them both.

Katinski · 11/06/2019 23:17

I've a bean slicer, too. I inherited itGrin
And I've also got a corned beef tin opener that's made of iron with a bull's head(not a real one, that'd be silly)on it.
And old silver serving spoons.
And my grandpa's State Express cigarette box.

SarahAndQuack · 11/06/2019 23:22

TheNoodles, my parents had one of those well into my teens, and I thought they'd got rid of it - recently found it in their garage! Grin

I remember the lovely sound it made, too.

SarahAndQuack · 11/06/2019 23:25

@peachsummer, my house definitely isn't posh! Three bedroom end-terrace, with a major damp problem, rented out for well below market rate. We have a pantry purely because the house dates back that far. We also have a huge boiler room, which currently houses the new oil-fired boiler, but which is large enough to have housed the older solid-fuel stove and, before that, to have been the wood store for the fireplaces. The pantry is the room directly next to this, and it has tiny windows with a wire grille over them, and double-thickness walls so everything would have stayed cool. There are also huge scary meat hooks in the ceiling.

Hotterthanahotthing · 11/06/2019 23:29

Bars of soap are very on trend!

RainbowMum11 · 11/06/2019 23:53

Well, by these standards, I have a pantry, dining table (covered in play doh & craft stuff), side board, lots of books, and .... I don't care!!!

jennymanara · 11/06/2019 23:57

Yes I only have a pantry because it is an old house that has not had much modernisation. They were standard in old houses.

Given how recent some of this old fashioned items are, I'm going to throw in our 32" LCD TV. I probably can throw it in, too. It survived one of the boys trying to smash it up with the Wii fit, about 5 years ago. I doubt if an LED TV would have made it through that particular day. We keep looking at new ones now, as the navigation has become painfully slow, but finding them lacking, unless we want one twice the size (we don't!) It also has built in freesat, which we'd miss.

PigletJohn · 12/06/2019 00:25

Brass doorknobs

Horizontal sash locks

2 x landlines

Silver teapot etc

KnitFastDieWarm · 12/06/2019 00:42

Victorian nursing chair that belonged to my mother in law’s very elderly neighbour - so, so useful for feeding a baby/nighttime cuddles with a fractious toddler (in fact I’m sitting on it now Smile)
My beloved 1960s teak drinks cabinet, complete with sliding glass front and fold down section for storing one’s Sherry - it’s now home to our record player and record collection.
Vinyl (see above)
Swirly artex ceiling in the living room which I actually love as it fits the house (built in the early 60s) perfectly.
Pincushion
Sewing machine
Knitting needles
Crocheted blankets
Hideous vertical blinds which we will be replacing very shortly Grin

BlackPrism · 12/06/2019 00:50

I... can't actually think of anything tbh. Even my mop is a steam mop. Am 24 but quite domestic... does my hand-held whip count?

MaMisled · 12/06/2019 00:51

A larder

BlackPrism · 12/06/2019 00:53

I have 4 bookshelves full of real paper books?? (And 2 full kindles).

I have a cream jug shaped like a cow? In memory of my Nanas I had to have it!

We're not allowed proper clocks as they drive DP batty

PenguinsRabbits · 12/06/2019 01:16

A thatched roof - house is from 1550, which seems to come with a squirrel and lots of singing birds.

A 14 year old blind cat, DH and I - we have all seen better days. Smile

Gingerkittykat · 12/06/2019 01:23

I have a piano stool my grandad made, I've no idea how old it is and have made the sad decision to sell it since I don't have a piano and live in a tiny space.

The pressure cooker given to my parents as a wedding gift in 1972. I don't use it for pressure cooking anymore but it is a big solid pot I use regularly to make soup.

A 1930s or so wardrobe, bought for £7 when I was a skint single mum trying to furnish my first home alone. It happens to fit perfectly in an alcove in my new house and I would need to spend a fortune to get something modern of the same quality.

CherryPavlova · 12/06/2019 09:52

Ah if we mean old as opposed to old fashioned-
Salt cupboard
Bread oven
Wattle and daub walls
Ancient parquet
17th century furniture
A well turning bar
Inglenooks

Jammydoughnuts · 12/06/2019 10:00

I have one of those art deco display cabinets with the sliding doors where I keep all my books. I also have a radio gram.

I'm dying to get a large cheese plant but I'm worried it will attract those pesky 'floating' flies Sad

Swoopinggulls · 12/06/2019 10:14

Lots and lots of houseplants. I read on MN that nobody under forty has them. I'm over forty so that's ok.

Landline. Anyone who thinks this is outdated must have decent mobile reception, unlike me.

Teapot. Even when I used teabags I always used a teapot. Now I use only loose leaf tea.

REDCARBLUE · 12/06/2019 10:34

What is old fashioned about inglenooks?

I have one and if i took it down, the rest of the house comes too. Its over 250 yrs old.

Its old, not old fashioned.

mydogisthebest · 12/06/2019 12:26

Well if houseplants are old fashioned I have no hope! I have over 70 houseplants and fully intend to get more. I love houseplants and think a house looks bare without any

stupidboyman · 12/06/2019 12:27

Servant bells

Swoopinggulls · 12/06/2019 12:29

I love houseplants and think a house looks bare without any

Exactly how I feel!

RomanyQueen · 12/06/2019 12:30

No hope for me if house plants are old fashioned, we have lots, even an aspidistra in the hall.
For you oldies, it's not the biggest in the world though Grin

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 12/06/2019 13:50

Husband
Teasmaid
Drinks cabinet
Grandfather clock
‘Good’ cutlery
