An elderly lady has sent me money via PayPal in the mistake that I am a company.

She is adamant that my email/PayPal address is the one given by the company.

I believe she has made a typo but I would like to see for myself the actual company and check their payment information just in case they are the ones who have made a mistake.

My PayPal email is a persons name with an uncommon spelling and clearly not a business name.

The company name according to her is just called, ‘Welfare’ and she bought mugs.

Does that mean anything to anyone?

Her response to my asking for further information is

“You were the link for mugs from welfare.”

It sounds like she's tried to buy mugs from Wayfair.

newmomof1 · 11/06/2019 11:34

I'd definitely say WayFair too

WhatchaMaCalllit · 11/06/2019 11:36

IF the amount that she has paid to your PayPal account matches the amount for any mugs on this site (+delivery maybe) then you have your answer:
www.wayfair.co.uk/kitchenware-tableware/sb0/mugs-cups-c1804729.html

I can see the Welfare/Wayfair link but why would their Paypal payment system go to you?

SoupDragon · 11/06/2019 11:39

When I've bought from major websites and paid with PayPal, I have never filled anything in to say where the payment should go.

Does your name match a mug being sold on Wayfair?

justchecking1 · 11/06/2019 11:39

Wayfair are huge though, I'd be surprised this hasn't happened before if it's them? Surely it's more likely to be a tiny start up type company?

WeAreAllAdults · 11/06/2019 11:41

Contact Paypal with copies of the messages she sent you. They will investigate and send the money back if it's a legitimate error and not a charge back scam.

Herocomplex · 11/06/2019 11:44

Or a charity with welfare in the title

itsabongthing · 11/06/2019 11:46

There are sites selling ‘welfare’ mugs eg cafepress.co.uk

Just refund her and be done with it, her order won’t have gone through anyway so she needs to go back and check!

OKBobble · 11/06/2019 11:54

Is your name Cathy Press?Grin

Soola · 11/06/2019 12:28

@OKBobble Grin

No my name is not Cathy Press!

Thanks for replies.

The lady is confused and it’s possible she does mean Wayfair.

I’ve heard of them but have never bought from Wayfair so will have a look on there website.

Thanks for replies.

No refund from me until I find out where she saw my email because I don’t want a chargeback and be out of pocket for her mistake.

Have you tried googling your email address to see if it appears anywhere?

Soola · 11/06/2019 19:32

@PatriciaHolm yes and it doesn’t appear.

The lady is very confused.

She now says it’s a specific dog breed charity.

I have googled the dog breed followed by the word welfare and lots have come up.

She won’t acknowledge my request for her to screenshot the website or send me a link.

She says she’s never had a problem before buying their stuff but then says that it’s actually to do with her daughter and her daughter is in meetings at work and is busy.

She wants me to forward the money on to the company!

I’ve respectfully suggested that she doesn’t buy anything else online until it’s verified by her daughter.

Sounds like a scam to me. I'd refuse torefund and let them take it up themselves with PayPal. It's their fuck up.
